5.0 out of 5 stars I love this book!
As a Master Gardener, I am always looking for books on gardening with more content than just plant descriptions and light requirements. I must say that when I saw the "Environmental approach" I thought, "Oh no" not for me! I am not generally that concerned with environmental awareness; I try to do the right thing, but would prefer not to read about it.

2.0 out of 5 stars Southern Gardening - overly chatty
I was looking for garden info and a gift book for a knowledgeable gardening friend. This book is VERY chatty with unneccessary fluff. I don't have time to read all the side chatter. It shows invasive plants in the small color images section. You would not know unless you went to the text that these are non-native invasives. I would prefer more direct information,...

What a pleasant surprise; I could not put this book down. Ms. Harrison's mastery of gardening science, her articulate prose, and her down home story-telling style made this a book for beginner gardeners as well as very experienced gardeners like myself. I highly recommend this book.

Marie Harrison has opened my eyes about the effect that we as gardeners have on the environment. How I manage my backyard really does make a difference. Her plant suggestions and advice about proper placement in the landscape help me to garden more successfully. The organization of chapters into seasons of the year help me know when to plant different kinds of plants. I particularly enjoyed the section on groundcovers. Marie's writing is based on her experiences, and she speaks with the voice of an experienced gardener. This is an important book for every gardener in the deep South.

I love her personal touch. You can clearly understand what Marie is saying.

Love her book!!!!!!!!

I am a long time lover of plants and yards. Now, in my retirement, I'm trying to take a natural approach to my newly acquired yard. I want to plant items that enhance the habitats around me. I so need Marie Harrison's ideas. Her pages make very clear what will work in my yard. Her personal testimonials keep me in stitches. This book is an easy read. It makes research of my needs no longer necessary. Thumbing through, I can easily find answers and suggestions. Thanks, Marie!

5.0 out of 5 stars Not a dust-catcher!, December 6, 2005
By
This review is from: Southern Gardening: An Environmentally Sensitive Approach (Paperback)
This book is packed with helpful information presented in easy-to-read fashion; it will be of help to the novice as well as the experienced gardener. Marie tells readers in the South all they need to know to have a beautiful, environment-friendly garden. She suggests plants for the different seasons; she discusses trees and shrubs; she gives helpful information about ground covers; she includes a month-by-month guide for caring for the garden. The colored photos help in identifying and choosing plants that will give just the effect the reader wants. Besides all that, the book is fun to read, as we learn about the author's own mistakes (few) as well as her successes (many) in gardening. It will never collect dust on your shelf!
