The Constellations - New Album, Do It For Free

In the nearly two years since the release of Southern Gothic, their raucous and infectious full length ode to sweet home Atlanta, The Constellations have toured England and Scotland and put over 160,000 miles on their 15 passenger van and trailer hookup, hitting every club, nook and cranny possible across the U.S. and Canada. Mixing it up with and loving every bit of crackling energy exchange ... Read more in Amazon's The Constellations Store

Editorial Reviews

Drawing from the grittier aspects of Atlanta s ever growing nightlife scene, the group looks to shift the spotlight from the blinged-out glamour of hip-hop to a darker, edgier, sex-drugs- and-rock- n -roll soaked subculture. --Southeast Performer

Vocalist [Elijah] Jones channels the spirit of a deranged and street-hardened bard spouting off tales of drugs and urban depravity over a web of intense back beats and a confident disco swagger. --Creative Loafing

Product Description

Dubbed an Atlanta supergroup by locals, The Constellations officially formed when vocalist Elijah Jones teamed up with Grammy-winning producer Ben H. Allen (Animal Collective, Gnarls Barkley) to create Southern Gothic. Jones and Allen tossed ideas around for two years before finally recording. Now the band and its ever-changing line-up of Atlanta musicians is playing sold out shows around the Southeast s most popular venues. Recorded at Maze Studios, Southern Gothic (2008) is a meandering tour of the underbelly of Atlanta, lead by Jones gruff delivery and parabolic lyrics. Lush production invokes the muscular rhythms of 70s Fela Kuti, the propelling pop sensibility of the Gorillaz and the vocals of a modern-day Tom Waits. Cee Lo of Gnarls Barkley and newly signed SRC artist Asher Roth ( I Love College single) are featured on the album, with a revision of Tom Waits Step Right Up as a centerpiece. Also on the album are Atlanta musicians Brad Hagen (Trances Arc) and Julian Dorio (The Whigs). The Constellations live show consists of a five-man band backing Jones trademark vocals and persona: James Arnold, Ryan Davis, Jamie Gordon, Wes Hoffman (Second Shift), and Chandler Rentz (Snowden, Ocha la Rocha). A crowd-pleasing, all-girl Clap Squad covers back-up vocals and completes the spectacle.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Definite Must-Hear September 19, 2010
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
After hearing "Felicia" played multiple times on Alt Nation, I found myself eagerly awaiting this album, and I was not disappointed. The variety is amazing, and I must say that any band that can include a 9-minute beat poem and still have me enjoying the entire album must be doing something right. Absolute ear candy from track 1 to track 11: the baroque opening to "December," the Tom Waits sample underlying "Step Right Up," and Jones's gritty vocals make sure this will be repeating on my playlist for some time to come.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unique music September 7, 2009
Format:Audio CD
This is a good mix of hip hop & pop. It makes you wonder why they aren't more known. The vocalist selects his words pretty carefully so it all fits together well and makes sense and not just rhyming jibberish.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Real Deal September 20, 2008
Format:MP3 Music
Where the hell did these guys come from? Who cares....this album is a modern rock masterpiece. Reminds me a bit of Johnny Society, another forgotten bunch of rock geniuses. Check out the tracks 'Felicia' and 'On My Way Up'. Highly recommended!

I wish this band would rename itseslf to groove factory or something. Just a really fun and groovy record. It has a good mix of different song styles and I believe has a little something for everyone. I highly recommend it.
