5.0 out of 5 stars Southern Girl, March 1, 2000
By
Howell A. Johnson (New York, New York) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Southern Gul (Audio CD)
Don't dance....sit down and think! Erika always gives you food for thought through her original lyrics. "Southern Girl" is no exception. Like a real down home girl, she boasts of liking everything fried. Her mantra: Not to fry is to die, even tofu! You can't get much more original than that! The beat is hypnotically soothing accented with a clever and unexpected onomatopoeia...Buzzzzzzzzzz! So much is going on & on...from the home of the burning church....to the mouth of the teeth of gold..., she forces you on to step inside her world...What more could you ask of any artist?

I have loved Erykah since the first time that I heard On and On by her. I live and was raised in South Dallas,Tx where she is from therfore i am very familiar with the southerngirl single and I am glad to see that she has not forgotten where she came from . You should really go get the cd and support Erykah especially if you are from Big "D" little "a" double"ll"(DALLAS)

5.0 out of 5 stars Acapella Erykah, August 13, 1999

This song really had to grow on me. I love anything Erykah Badu puts her hand on. I love the way she thinks, but when I heard Southern Girl. She really threw me for a loop. This song represents what she stated on VH1 once, "I recycle trash and turn it into art". You definitely have to appreciate the artist in Erykah. I can't wait for her entire album to be released.

5.0 out of 5 stars Typical E.Badu, June 2, 2008

The word "typical" would lead one to think that this would be a negative review. That could not be further from the truth! I can not remember when this song came out, but it was never on an E.Badu release. I have all her albums. At any rate, I love the lyrics, Rahzel, and being a southern gul myself, just made me love the whole vibe. Ms. Badu never ceases to amaze me!

5.0 out of 5 stars STRAIGHT FROM THE DIRTY SOUTH, September 6, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Southern Gul (Audio CD)
EVERYTHING THAT THIS WOMAN MAKES IS OFF THE HOOK. WE HAVE A LOT OF MALES THAT REPRESENT THE SOUTH AND I LOVE THEM BUT ERYKAH BADU SHES REPRESENTS AND A WHOLE DIFFERENT LIGHT. SO TO ME SHE IS ONE THE GREATEST FEMALE RECORDING ARTIST OUT THERE AND HE NAME WILL FOREVER REIGN. WHETHER YOUR FROM THE EAST, WEST, NORTH AND ESPECIALLY IF YOU WAY DOWN SOUTH YOU GOT TO BE FEELING THE WORDS THAT SHE SPITS OUT.
