Book Description

February 1, 1974
Distributed by the University of Nebraska Press for Caxton Press

When mineral riches were found in southern Idaho "boomtowns" arose across this rugged land.  When the mining activity ceased these towns were quickly abandoned yet they still stand; a testimony to the vagaries of life in the frontier in pursuit of gold and silver.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Southern Idaho Ghost Towns is a very well-written book that should appeal to all kinds of people: Treasure hunters, historians, weekend adventurers. Anyone planning an expedition to the old mining camps of southern Idaho would do well to carry this book along as a guide."—W.C. Jameson, Treasure Facts

5.0 out of 5 stars This book gives the reader an inside look at old Idaho., July 14, 1999

Our family has enjoyed "Southern Idaho Ghost Towns" since the day we found this book. We even refer to it as the ghost towning "Bible". It has been read with ease and interest many times and I always catch something new. We have been to many of the towns mentioned, and the decriptions and stories about them are breathtaking. Sparling paints a realistic picure of early Idaho that you can enjoy simply through his eyes, or check out for yourself!

5.0 out of 5 stars S. Idaho ghosts, April 3, 2006

This review is from: Southern Idaho Ghost Towns (Paperback)

Wayne Sparling has put together an excellent ghost town book for southern Idaho (south of the Salmon River). Most of these towns, of course, were mining camps, and most of them probably still offer the visitor something man-made to look at (though disappearing fast). Towns are arranged by sections, with a map at the beginning of each section. (The maps are the only disappointing thing about the book: they aren't very detailed.) The book is packed with photos - just about every site has at least one photo. I finally picked up the latest edition; my earlier one completely fell apart from use. Hopefully it's updated again soon.

This is a great book for anyone with interest in Idaho Ghost Towns. It contains many interesting facts on the towns, and has plenty of good black and white photos to enjoy. It's a great book to take along on trips, so that when you can stop at one of these old ghost towns, you can read up on it.
