The Musics of Vietnam is a popular work, on the order of the John and Alan Lomax collection of American folk songs. Pham Duy spent twenty years traveling throughout Vietnam collecting regional folk music. His collection represents the range as well as the diversity of the Vietnamese people—North, South, and Central.
Pham Duy resides in Saigon, where he continues collecting and composing. He was born in Hanoi, and studied in Paris.
