Book Description

March 17, 2009 Southern Living (Hardcover Oxmoor)
From the Southern Living family comes this keepsake cookbook steeped in classic comfort food and warm reflections sure to strike a familiar chord.

Southern Living Comfort Food features more than 150 wholesome dishes--the kinds of recipes that are shared at supper clubs, passed down through generations of families, and swapped over coffee. Recipes like Banana Pudding Pie, Poppy Seed-Chicken Casserole, and BLT Potato Salad are presented alongside poignant essays that stir memories of family, friends, and the whimsies of childhood. Full of simple and satisfying dishes like Chicken Pot Pie and Pan-Fried Pork Chops, Southern Living Comfort Food is for young and old alike. Its food for
the soul.

Its a tribute to family traditions.

I watch her do it every year. Mom leafs through files, shuffles through kitchen drawers, and finally emerges victorious with a handful of old, dog-eared recipes for the dishes our family always expects on the table every Thanksgiving and Christmas. This disorganization isn't a sign of an untidy housekeeper; like every good Southern cook, she's showing respect for family history.

-Dana Adkins Campbell

3.0 out of 5 stars It all depends on what you are looking for ... January 9, 2010
Format:Hardcover
I had purchased this book for myself but will be giving it to my niece who has moved into her first apartment. This is a very broad and encompassing collection of classic comfort food recipes ... some utilizing prepared ingrediants such as refridgerator biscuits, cans of cream of chicken or mushroom soup and one even a prepared pecan pie.

Being a "from scratch" cook it is not as appealing because of how basic some of the recipes are. But for someone wanting a good collection of the basic comfort food recipes or someone just starting out on the road to cooking this would be a wonderful addition to their cokbook collection.

3.0 out of 5 stars Repetitive August 31, 2009
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
We already own many of the Southern Living cook books and 8 years worth of the Christmas cook books as well. This book is a compilation of the recipes already featured in our other SL cookbooks. I guess I was expecting something else, but wasn't surprised. My husband has claimed this one as his own, because it keep him from having to pour through dozens of SL cook books looking for one of his favorite recipes, which undoubtably is in this new book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Common but Good Recipes August 4, 2011
Format:Hardcover
If you like comfort food and are not a brand new cook, you probably already have many or most of the recipes you'll find in this cookbook. That said, there's a great variety in here so you may find a few new options to round out your repertoire.

The layout of this book is very user-friendly, and the photography is gorgeous. There were a few great unique recipes like banana pound cake that were worth picking up the book for all by themselves!

5.0 out of 5 stars One of my GO TO cookbooks January 3, 2012
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
I make notes in all of my cookbooks so I will know what I liked, didn't like, what I need more of, etc..and this book has EXCELLENT marked on ALMOST every page! As a true southern belle, these are indeed "tried and true" recipes of the south. There were only a few recipes I did not feel appealing. Highly recommended!

4.0 out of 5 stars Definitely made me want to get cooking! September 15, 2009
Format:Hardcover
I read through this cookbook and almost everything looks delicious. I have a list of recipes I want to try ASAP. I went ahead and made the sweet potato casserole last night and it was a big hit. My daughter is going to love the BLT potato salad; I think I'll make that this weekend. The only thing I didn't like was that the side stories mentioned the authors' favorite foods from the past but didn't give recipes for those dishes. It was a bit disappointing to not get the chance to taste the foods that were so lovingly described. Aside from that, I wholeheartedly recommend this cookbook.
