I had purchased this book for myself but will be giving it to my niece who has moved into her first apartment. This is a very broad and encompassing collection of classic comfort food recipes ... some utilizing prepared ingrediants such as refridgerator biscuits, cans of cream of chicken or mushroom soup and one even a prepared pecan pie.

Being a "from scratch" cook it is not as appealing because of how basic some of the recipes are. But for someone wanting a good collection of the basic comfort food recipes or someone just starting out on the road to cooking this would be a wonderful addition to their cokbook collection.

This cookbook has quickly become one of my favorites of the hundreds of cookbooks that I own. All of the personal stories and anecdotes make for great reading an the recipes are simple, down-home, recipes that brings back fond memories of my childhood. I highly recommend it for the "Foodies" that you know.

We already own many of the Southern Living cook books and 8 years worth of the Christmas cook books as well. This book is a compilation of the recipes already featured in our other SL cookbooks. I guess I was expecting something else, but wasn't surprised. My husband has claimed this one as his own, because it keep him from having to pour through dozens of SL cook books looking for one of his favorite recipes, which undoubtably is in this new book.

If you like comfort food and are not a brand new cook, you probably already have many or most of the recipes you'll find in this cookbook. That said, there's a great variety in here so you may find a few new options to round out your repertoire.

The layout of this book is very user-friendly, and the photography is gorgeous. There were a few great unique recipes like banana pound cake that were worth picking up the book for all by themselves!

I make notes in all of my cookbooks so I will know what I liked, didn't like, what I need more of, etc..and this book has EXCELLENT marked on ALMOST every page! As a true southern belle, these are indeed "tried and true" recipes of the south. There were only a few recipes I did not feel appealing. Highly recommended!

I read through this cookbook and almost everything looks delicious. I have a list of recipes I want to try ASAP. I went ahead and made the sweet potato casserole last night and it was a big hit. My daughter is going to love the BLT potato salad; I think I'll make that this weekend. The only thing I didn't like was that the side stories mentioned the authors' favorite foods from the past but didn't give recipes for those dishes. It was a bit disappointing to not get the chance to taste the foods that were so lovingly described. Aside from that, I wholeheartedly recommend this cookbook.

I have only used one of the recipes so far, it was just as described. I plan to use others during the holiday season. I really loved the articles decribing times in the past. the book is just what I expected it to be "WONDERFUL."The name absolutely describes the book.

I make a traditional, Sunday dinner almost every week and I'm always looking for new recipes. Southern Living Comfort Food: A delicious trip down memory lane is a lovely book that will become my new recipe-bible.

All Southern Living cookbooks are a delight with beautiful pictures and tempting recipes. The book is divided into chapters on Comfort Food Classics, Breakfast Anytime, Fresh from the Garden, Casseroles and Beyond, Soups and Stews, Desserts, and Holidays and Special Occasions. The recipes include notes about cooking tips and especially, the brands that were used in testing (Kraft caramels or Duke mayonnaise). But what makes Comfort Food more than a recipe book is that it includes stories by various writers and cooks about favorite recipes, foods, entertaining, memories associated with certain recipes and family treasures. A true bonus is that Comfort Food contains a forward and several recipes by my favorite author, Pat Conroy. I've already made note of five recipes that I'd like to try including Fabulous Tuna-Noodle Casserole, Cola Pot Roast, Chicken Pot Pie, Beef Daube and Seafood Gumbo.

The one negative that I do have about Comfort Food is that some of the recipes use ready-made ingredients. I'm not opposed to using ingredients like cream of mushroom soup or bagged herb stuffing. But I do have a problem when a recipe calls from frozen mashed potatoes (Buttermilk-Garlic Mashed Potatoes) or chicken flavored Ramen noodles (Chicken Noodle Soup). I hold Southern Living to a higher standard than that. But despite these small issues, I can't wait to dig in and start cooking.
