About the Author

Although she pursued a career in landscape architecture after college, Gena Knox's passion for food stayed with her and she became intrigued with the process of plank grilling. She began to make her own planks, which developed into a new career in September 2003 when she founded Fire & Flavor with her husband. The company soon grew to offer a complete line of gourmet grilling products. With continued success, Fire & Flavor was named in Inc. magazine's annual Inc. 500 ranking of the fastest-growing private companies in the country in 2007. Her culinary instincts and knack for creating approachable dishes led her to author her first cookbook, Gourmet Made Simple, which published in May 2008.

Modern Southern is a bit of an oxymoron. Anything "Southern" tends to have old-fashioned built into it. Gena Knox, however, embodies "modern Southern," and her new cookbook "Southern My Way" echoes that. I mean look at that cover photo. Well-dressed, coiffed and poised. Modern Southern! Modernity aside her cookbook covers all the Southern classics albeit often updated. Which I think is nice. Too many Southern cookbooks tend to stick to the tried-and-true, the old standbys that everyone is used to.

Knox is a native of a small town in South Georgia. She started helping her mother in the kitchen at a young age. She grew up cooking with fruits and vegetables out of the family's garden, or from local farms and farmers. Home cooking was the norm for the area. "Southern My Way" is her answer to her upbringing: a compilation of traditional Southern dishes updated with a lighter, healthier approach with a focus on using local ingredients. In fact, cleverly interspersed throughout the book are one to two page breakaways that highlight a local artisan, farmer, or purveyor like for instance the pages on Ted Dennard's Savannah Bee Company, a small artisan honey company. As I read through the book I liked more and more that Knox was hitting all the 100 miles touchstones.

Both the cookbook's design and layout are unpretentious yet friendly, easy to use, interesting to read with lots of full-page color photographs throughout. The recipes are easy to follow; one feature that I appreciated is how she breaks up the recipe instructions into sections: first. next. and last. First do this, next do that, and lastly do this. I'd like to see more cookbooks use this formula. I'm a big fan of deviled eggs so one of the first recipes I tried was Deviled Eggs, Bloody Mary-Style.

I pre-ordered two copies because I loved the first book by this author. The second one definitely does not disappoint. The book arrived today and I had a difficult time choosing what to cook first. I think the Brussels Sprouts with Lemon and Pecorino will likely be what I serve tonight. The recipes are gourmet southern and healthy (1 tsp of butter vs. a stick, prosciutto instead of fatback). I can hardly wait to try the rest! The photographs are lovely. This would be a perfect gift for anyone who likes healthy, fresh food.

Having been raised in the North, I lack the instinct for southern cooking and, admittedly, have been a bit self-conscious about learning. Gena's book has inspired this transplant to try her hand at it and with amazing results. The straightforward recipes and the delicious anecdotes make this a keeper, and it's not relegated to the kitchen, either. Southern My Way has earned a spot on my coffee table - I can't put it down!

We got this cookbook as a gift, and love it. The biscuit recipe is so easy and soooooo good. We've tried about 20 recipes in this book and have only been disappointed once. I'm buying it as a present for someone else right now. But don't spend more than $35 getting it from a non-amazon seller (at the time of this review it costs $65 from third party sellers on amazon. , look elsewhere and you can get it for the cover price of $35.
