Editorial Reviews

Tim McGraw has sold over 40 million units and dominated the charts with 30 #1 singles. He's won three Grammys, 14 Academy of Country Music Awards, 11 Country Music Association Awards, 10 American Music Awards, three People's Choice Awards and numerous others. The first single from Southern Voice, 'It's A Business Doing Pleasure With You', is an up-tempo, tongue-in-cheek tale about the price paid for loving a woman who loves designer labels, penned by Nickelback's Chad Kroeger and singer-songwriter Brett James.

Southern Voice has a decidedly mellow tone to it throughout most of its 12 tracks, the majority of which never really move past mid-tempo. This pattern is broken up only by the two songs chosen as lead singles: Business Doing Pleasure with You and Southern Voice. These songs were undoubtedly tapped by the label to market an album that, while it doesn't quite reach the territory of "dark" (though the theme of Good Girls and parts of I'm Only Jesus certainly qualifies), contains a number of, in McGraw's words, "flawed characters" that explore a sizable amount of pretty heavy territory and give the album a pretty dominant somber tone.

That being said, the album is strongest when immersed this heavy subject matter and those songs seem to have an underlying power combined with an atmosphere of reverence and immediacy, due part to excellent production, but mainly because McGraw is the master of conveying emotion and these songs involve very emotional subject matter. On first listen, I felt the album was really good, but after a dozen listens, I'm of the opinion that Tim has crafted a masterpiece of a record.

With Southern Voice, Tim McGraw as given us an album that is a mature masterpiece; these are songs by a mature artist in his prime who has no peer when it comes to conveying emotion and feeling through his music. Never have I listened to a collection of songs, album or otherwise, that have hit a nerve and given me the chills like the songs on Southern Voice have. These are songs about mature people, for mature people; a collection of statements by a husband, father and son about life and what it's really like to live and grow for forty years.

Love You Goodbye: 5/5. This is one of the most powerful, heart-wrenching songs I have ever heard...

This has been described as a dark album and it is, but there is plenty here to break it up.

I love "Mr. Whoever You Are", "You Had To Be There", "Forever Seventeen", "Still", "Love You Goodbye" and "Good Girls". I like stuff on the dark side myself.

"Ghost Town Train", along with "It's a Business Doing Pleasure With You" and "Southern Voice do a good job of keeping it moving. I especially appreciate the fact that Tim can lighten it up, sound wise anyway, and do age appropriate/place in life songs. He's way past the country boy stuff, as I am.

Bottom line, he picks great songs and delivers them in such a way that draws me in like no one else can. He's evolving and growing and I'm loving the journey!

Tim McGraw's Southern Voice album rightfully deserves all the attention it's been getting; this is clearly a hot new album and Tim never sounded better! The songs are well composed and Tim's excellent phrasing makes him a masterful performer; he truly pours his heart and soul into these songs. The quality of the sound on this CD is terrific and the artwork is nicely done.

"Still' has a fantastic arrangement that molds major and minor keys together for a beautiful sound; this is a great way to start off the album! "Ghost Town Train" has a faster tempo and it all holds its own very well; Tim's very good diction enhances his performance all the more and those guitars just couldn't be better! The somewhat upbeat melody belies the seriousness of the lyrics about a woman who has left her man. "Good Girls" gets a fine treatment from Tim and the music fits in perfectly with Tim's singing. "Good Girls" is clearly a major highlight of this album.

"I Didn't Know It At The Time" is superlative music and the guitars help a lot to round out the musical arrangement; Tim aces this as effortlessly as if it were mere breathing--but of course we know that it really wasn't so easy; Tim's talent carries him through every time. "It's a Business Doing Pleasure with You" rocks very well; the mixture of country and rock works wonders for this tune and Tim delivers it to perfection--and beyond! "It's a Business Doing Pleasure with You" is a pretty intense song about a man who's going broke spending money to please his girlfriend; it's very well done. "If I Died Today" is thoughtful and memorable, to say the least; and I really like "Mr. Whoever You Are." "Mr. Whoever You Are" also gets a very sensitive treatment from Tim and it's very poignant.

The album is amazing, its a mature album for mature listeners as I read in another review, it covers it all with passion, amazing stories, and point on vocals.

Tim's album is not some cookie cutter, eye candy CD filled with pop songs for the masses. Its a album filled with songs on faith, love, forgiveness, hurt, and through it all Tim gives the words life with his one of a kind voice. These are songs about life the good and bad sung from an artist who realizes that and tells you HOW YOU feel. How many artists that sing for RADIO would cover a song like I'm Just Jesus.

I want to thank you for choosing to record Love You Goodbye, I cried like a baby listening to that song. Have lived a little and with 53 years under my belt, those words ring home for more than one of my family members and friends I've known through the years.

Some songs or little ditty's that fly up the chart and then are forgotten. Every once in while there is a song, that literally can touch a heart and change a life. Thank you for aiming for the heart with that song and many more on the album.

Songs like I'm Only Jesus and If I Died Today, speak volumes and once again has the power to change a life. Thank you for being that kinda of an artist. Have had a passion for music since I was a kid especially country and songs like these just makes me understand why.

Do yourself a favor an find a way to listen to this album, you will be moved an touched. If anything find a way to listen to Love You Goodbye and You Had To Be There, Tim's most moving, profound pieces of music of his career. It may change your life, your feelings and the way you treat people.

Some songs demand so much more from the listeners and even radio, they scream out to be heard.

Tim McGraw's new album, the song Love You Goodbye
Love You Goodbye is, bar none, the most powerful song I have EVER heard. It gets quite of bit of time in my review of this album that will be posted on Tuesday. It was written by Tom Douglas who is an incredible songwriter who has also written Grown Men Don't Cry, Why We Said Goodbye and My... Read More
