Biography

Maria Muldaur may be best known for her 1974 mega-hit “Midnight at the Oasis” and the follow-up, the iconic anthem “I’m A Woman.” But, her pop success aside, her 47 year career is best described as a long and rambling odyssey through various forms of American roots music.
In her teen years she was part of the folk revival of the early sixties, and she grew up ... Read more in Amazon's Maria Muldaur Store

Editorial Reviews

Muldaur's rich voice has only ripened with age. On this 1998 release, her roots-rock blend includes any style with the slightest hint of soul, including gospel, folk, blues, and R&B. The outstanding "Get Up, Get Ready" is a smoky jazz-blues shuffle with support from Mike Thompson's liquid electric piano and the Chambers Brothers' gospel-tinged backup vocal. Bruce Cockburn's panoramic title track owns a country feel, while "Latersville" calls to mind, of all bands, Steely Dan. Two eerie and stark Greg Brown covers, a New Orleans-style workout, and a raunchy Chicago blues bring Muldaur full circle. --Marc Greilsamer

Review

Muldaur, 54, has got the blues. She hasn't undergone any divine reinvention but once you zero in on the emotional nuances of her finely weathered drawl, you'll hear an inspired change of heart.... Her sassy strut on "Ring Me Up" and her jazzy purr on "Latersville" are stylistic devices that don't convey much from-the-gut soul. But when she stops being a slave to technique and focuses on universal feelings ... her voice becomes an oasis for troubled souls. -- People

Format: Audio CD
This is a great set of Muldaur songs, tinged with her gospel influences and religious understandings. "Ring Me Up" opens with a propulsive beat, bright background vocals & an addictive melody to make it a great CD opener. "Get Up, Get Ready" is a slow jazz gospel, "I'm gonna see my friends, I'm gonna see my Savior when this highway finally ends." The title track is a bit softer with horns and an interesting lyric, "When the sun comes up an enemy & nothing gives you shame." "Latersville" is a smoky jazz homage to good times late at night. It's got a great electric guitar part. Cymbals tap on the slow, passionate "Think About You." "There's A Devil on the Loose" is a peppy number with a laundry list of the world's ills including teenage pregnancy, murder and drugs. "Fool's Paradise" is a driving jazz blast. A beautiful piano plays as Maria sings, "I want to spend my life loving you" on "One Short Life." "If I Were You" is a soulful tease with a great beat, "No one will love you like I do." "Someday When We're Both Alone" is a slow mournful blues about unrequited love. "Blues Gives a Lesson" is a slow lounge tune that sways, "You might be a playboy, a big time Romeo." Maria Muldaur is in great voice with great soul jazz gospel influences. Enjoy!

To be honest, I didn't know Maria Muldaur. I heard "If I Were You" on the radio and then I found out her name. Bought the CD. To make a long story short: I got 4 other MM CDs and they all are great. Great voice, great songs, a very personal way to deliver all the songs, whether beautiful ballads or some great uptempo ones. Try "There's a Devil On The Loose", "One Short Life", "Think About You" and, of course, "If I Were You".

Maria Muldaur sings accompanied by musicians who beautifully complement her bitter-sweet story telling. It is honest, musical and contemporary as today's news. We could wish for a better world but not for a better blues singer.
