When I first saw Southland I was hooked on the realism. Having spent 15years as a paramedic I look for realism in medical and cop shows. Southland is a gritty drama that pulls no punches. I like the fact that it is taken from the cop on the beat point of view; what they face every day and how they respond to the depravity of some people. From the cop that drinks on the job to the cop that abuses pain pills to the goodness and innocense of the new cop on the job;the characters are well fleshed out and realistic. An all around great show.

I am a retired police officer with 25½ years of service. So, in general, I like "TV cop shows", but some a lot more than others. I can flatly state that Southland is the best of the crop. My personal opinion). Yes, it is actually an adult soap opera, in the sense that the show goes beyond the day to day action scenes, and gets in to the personal life of the characters. In the real world, most cops don't just leave everything at work and go home at the end of their shift to be Mr. Rogers in his neighborhood. I get every episode on my DVR and save it until the DVD comes out. Ever watch the show "Cops"? That is a good show, but I can assure you that most of the time the real cops on that show are playing to the camera. Good, but not 100% realistic. Ever notice on other TV cop shows that as the good guys go through a building looking for the bad guy, or execute a search warrant? Most of the time the drawn guns are pointing up in the air and when they do point it at a bad guy, their finger is alongside the trigger guard, not inside of it resting on the trigger. In real life when you advance with your weapon drawn, both hands on it, and it is pointed at the ground, not up in the air. So if you trip and fall, the gun goes off pointed at the ground, not as you fall foreward with a round accidentally going off straight ahead out in front of you. And trust me, when you are confronting a bad guy to have your weapon out, you are absolutely not standing within arms reach from him, and you absolutely/positively have your finger on the trigger, not resting alongside the trigger guard. A gritty, real life cop show/soap opera. I love it.

I have recently hooked up with the second season of TNT's "SouthLAnd", courtesy of GEM (a digital offshoot of our National Nine Network here in Australia), and I am very, very impressed. Executive produced by Ann Biderman ("NYPD Blue"); and Mitchell Burgess and Robin Green ("The Sopranos"; and more recently CBS drama "Blue Bloods"), I hope this raw, exceptionally well written and acted series makes its way to DVD real soon. It is gritty television drama at its very best.

The "seasons" of TV shows have shortened in recent years from episodes in the twenties to the teens; we all know that. But since when do six one-hour episodes count as a season? That's not even a calendar season which would be a miserly thirteen shows! Too many shows have downgraded to 12 or 13, but SIX!! And then to charge $25-35 for it! We need to tell the studios that this is pitiful. It's not worth the investment of money and emotional involvement to get six new episodes in a year and call it a "complete season." That's about as complete as congressional reform. Good writing, acting, and production deserve more of a venue than a six-episode "season."

This is an excellent series, and does not get too soapy with the story line. It is very in your face and gritty. Definitely not recommended for the "Politcally Correct" crowd. The characters are interesting and the good guys don't always win as in other police dramas. I'm glad TNT picked this series up. The suits at NBC were a little too faint hearted for such a show. I just wish it didn't take so long for it to come to dvd and I'm hoping we don't have to wait as long for the Seasons 3 and 4 to appear.

This is probably the best cop drama I have ever watched...you actually feel like your in the show it literally drags you in, its just a shame its only 6 episodes long..Can't wait for season 3 which is going to have 10 episodes. This is a good buy and as I couldn't get it through Amazon UK initially I ordered direct from Amazon US. I think i will do this for season 3 as well...

Southland is a good crime drama. It makes you feel for the characters.It feels real. Police dramas that tells all sides of the issues are worth watching.

I had never heard of this TV series until I saw it on sale at Amazon. The reviews were good, so I bought both seasons. We enjoyed all of it, and we're looking forward to season 3.

Love the show. I agree one of the best there is airing now. But I will not use "Instant Viewing" NEVER! I will buy it on DVD. Wake up AMAZON !!Q!

this series is worth watching over and over. great storyline for a cop series. keeps you wanting to see more
