I purchased this for my husband. He loves hiding things. I swear he was a squirrel in a past life. Anyway, back to the product. The first order had a defect. One book was glued higher than the other and caused it to lean to one side. They shipped me another out quickly. The hiding place isn't huge but it will hold a few items. My husband decided to hide a spare set of keys and a few coins in it. The top closes securly so you don't have to worrly about anything popping the books open. It looks natural on a book shelf because it is made from two real books. I would buy this again as a gift.

The book vault seems sturdy, but the books I received were "White Protestant Nation" and "The Preacher and the President". This item was intended to be a gift, and I really can't see the recipient displaying either of these on his bookshelf. Aside from the fact that visitors who are unfamiliar with the first title might think he has something offensive on his bookshelf, I was expecting something neutral that escapes notice - like a dictionary or a biography. I'm uncomfortable gifting something politically charged or with religious themes.

Let's face it: politics is a personal topic for ALL of us.

And the issue is twofold:
1) Wanting something that feels "normal" to look at
2) If the title is a total mismatch to the rest of the household, it stands OUT

And I sympathize with the seller: there are only so many books that probably "fit the bill" in terms of size.

But let's face it: the idea of political books is just a BAD idea.

Hey, I'm not especially liberal OR conservative.

But do I WANT The Clinton Tapes and Barbara Walters interviews?

No, not really. And more importantly, they're conspicuous and feel wrong in my place.

Want my advice? Stick to classic literature, dictionaries, and the safest titles possible.

I love the idea of a safe (or, since they don't actually lock, maybe we should call it a "hiding place") that is discreetly made out of a real book. This is an excellent spot for someone to hide things, especially if they have a large book collection. I, also agree that sending out different book titles on every shipment is a great idea...that way even if someone else may have a book safe of their own at home, they may not think that you also have one, because the title of theirs isn't identical to the one you have. However, like most people are saying, I am not happy with the titles sent being so completely different from anything else that I would ever have on my bookshelf. I think a great suggestion would be to have different genres to choose from when ordering the book safes, such as "history, classical, educational, fiction, mystery, biography, political, religious"...something like that. Then the book safes would be more personalized, therefore fitting in to each customer's book shelves more discreetly. I haven't found this to be an option anywhere that these book safes are sold, but I believe this option would eliminate most every bad review I have read on this product so far. Other than that, the product is great, the price is great!

i bought this "hide" for my small S&W pistol, no other gun other than a 1 1/2' inch snubnose would fit. But my little Smith fits perfectly with NO room to spare. So if you have anything other than a subnose forget buying this to hide your gun. Excellent product.

I would give this a 5 star but I ordered two of the book vaults and they sent me the same pair of books, It looks highly conspicuous on my shelf, two sets of the same books paired together. At least they could have sent me two different pairs. This is keeping me from buying more, What would I do if they sent the same pair for a third time?
It's a great idea and well made, You just can't really buy more then one.

Good hidden storage space; looks completely natural on the bookshelf, because it *is* two books hooked together with storage carved into them.

The bottom of the books don't line up exactly. It is not noticeable on the shelf though. Other than that this is great for items that don't necessarily have to be secure, but that you would like out of sight. I received one historical book and one fantasy book in the bundle. The history book fits in well with my collection, the other one not so much.

I don't have the patience to make one myself, so this will work fine.

I noticed other reviewers mentioning the book titles were not boring enough. They were right. While this product does live up to what is advertised, the books I received were far too interesting for what should be a diversion safe. The two books I got where a book about Willie Mays, and a book written by Karl Rove. Either of these books would appeal to the average sports fan or political junkie. I'd much rather get books that are completely random novels or something that nobody would want to pick up.

Everything about this product is wonderful except that I received an Oprah title as one of my books. I would've hoped for a slightly less known name printed in huge letters on the side of my safe where I am keeping valuables....
