Product Description

Product Description

This cordless phone emergency back-up system lets cordless phones work even during a blackout. The unit conveniently plugs into the cordless phone's base unit and its power supply and will automatically charge from the wall.

Amazon.com

The one downside to modern cordless phones is a big one if it ever catches you unaware: they don't work during power outages. This backup power supply from Southwestern Bell prevents this unnecessary hassle by providing 24 hours of standby time or four hours of talk time. It works with most cordless phones on the market. LEDs on the front panel display a visual cue to the amount of power left in the pack. The boxy modern styling and funky blue light panel make this power supply worthy of a permanent home on the counter instead of stuffed away in the closet with the rest of the emergency provisions. Easy to use, the unit connects between your cordless phone's power supply and the AC wall outlet.

Customer Reviews

This device provides DC current; the phone system requires low-voltage AC, so this will not work.

After disassembling the unit and charging the battery separately, it still would not output voltage on loss of power.

The supplier refunded my payment without any problem since they were out of stock and unable to supply a replacement.

I actually have 2 of these for both my wireless phone systems. They are great. The first one I purchased at a Walmart "junk bin" sale - I think they stopped carrying it. I decided to purchase this one when my old one died. I was a bit shocked at the price but these seem to be hard to find so I guess it was worth it. They keep the phone functional for a reasonable time during power failures so, coupled with the battery operated handset, solve the problem of phone usage during blackouts (at least short blackouts).

I've owned 2 of these since 2005, they worked fine for my 2 different cordless VTechs, but the voltage range is a bit limited. These battery backup systems need 6 VDC to 18 VDC as a power source, but some cordless phones only offer 5 VDC power; this battery backup might not work for those cordless phone systems based on less than 6 VDC.

I found that for cordless telephones, the standby time was decent, but I also learned that as you get to the end of the rated standby time, the available talk time is also proportionately reduced, so a rating of "up to 1 hour talk time" really isn't possible when the power has been out for a long time. A smarter option for long power outages would be to use a conventional cord type telephone, instead of a cordless and such a battery backup as this. If your power goes out often but only for a few hours at a time, this should be good for you. I do not know if the manufacturer still produces these, and if you get one that was manufactured a long time ago, the battery might need to be replaced and is not something I'd suggest could be done by many homeowners.

Those are the issues that make this battery backup less than a great idea, and especially for cordless telephone situations.

For the electronic hobbyist.... this battery backup is interesting, because it could be used to provide backup power for other battery operated devices such as some CD players, some portable MP3 players, some game devices, some caller ID systems, some answering machines and so on. It uses a common size of SLA battery, an aged battery is not an issue for such a hobbyist.

Your mileage may vary.

This product seemed like an excellent idea, especially during power outages. However, this phone backup system was poor in quality and design. This system requires you to use your cordless phone's power adaptor to plug into one of four power input holes. This feeds power into the backup system. My phone's power adaptor didn't fit or couldn't grip onto one of the one of the flimsy wires or plugs in one of the holes.

I purchased this piece for the Vtech cordless phone system that I purchased at the same time. This device provides DC current; the phone system requires low-voltage AC, so this will not work. Unfortunately, I was not aware of this requirement until after I received the phone and opened the package. I need to return this piece for a credit. What do I need to do?

This would be a great low cost solution to keep the portable home phone base station active during an outage. However, the unit comes with several adapters but non of them fit my Panasonic system. I was able to cobble connectors by cutting the wires soldering on appropriate connectors. The next issue was it was not able to charge the battery and failed to output power when supply power was removed. After disassembling the unit and charging the battery separately, it still would not output voltage on loss of power. The battery appears to be functional and the charging indicator flashes as expected but the the battery voltage continues to decline. The solution was to discard the unit and use a real UPS unit to provide emergency power.
