Editorial Reviews

An incredible and emotionally jarring musical journey from one of France's most respected and best musicians within the black metal scene. Alcest sole proprietor, and multi-instrumentalist Neige has always been seen as one of the most recognized and talented musicians within France's illustrious black metal underground. With experiences in such respected acts as Peste Noire, Mortirera, and more recently with the wonder known as Amesoeurs, Neige has proven himself to be an exceptional and distinct musician within the scene. And one of the most respected.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dying with a smile through life's path August 10, 2009
Format:Audio CD
Alcest - Souvenirs d'Un Autre Monde
France - 2007
Prophecy Productions
Niege - all instruments and vocals

I discovered Alcest, when I was listening to AUSTERE, so when I ordered this album I was expecting something similar to Austere, and the depressive melancholic black metal scene.

When Alcest's album arrived to me, I understand that this is not the same style as Austere, Alcest reflects the purity and the sadness inside the mind of a man.

It can guide you through the desolated paths of life, all across the pain and then set you free with a peaceful smile.

That is Alcest, the pure decadence of the insignificance of being alive.

NECROSADIK!

5.0 out of 5 stars How shoegaze and metal should sound!! March 10, 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Released in 2007, Souvenirs D'un Autre Monde (Memories of Another World) put (the one piece and originally black metal band) Alcest on the map in the metal community. Only six songs and about 41 minutes, Alcest perfected what was done on their 2005 EP, Le Secret. Achingly pretty melodies and vocals glitter the whole entire album from start to finish. Main band member, Neige, sings like a light gust of wind over the gorgeous guitar melodies. Every once in a while he'll show his teeth when the riffs get blackened. But overall, things stay fairly calm throughout. Fans who have listened to his albums from 2010 and 2012 but haven't heard this should definitely check it out since it is one of the, if not the, definitive album for this style of metal. All of the songs are standouts, especially the closing song Tir Non Og, which features quiet percussion, acoustic guitar and dreamy vocals with piano drifting in and out while towards the end a string section fades into the background.

Pros- Perfect from start to finish. Great ideas never overstay their welcome or get boring. Perfectly balanced between shoegaze and great metal.
Cons- None.
Overall- One of the best metal (related) albums from 2007, if not the best (along with the releases by Pig Destroyer, Deathspell Omega, Dillinger Escape Plan, Caina and High on Fire).

5.0 out of 5 stars you're not burning churches to this stuff... October 23, 2007
Format:Audio CD
Although this French one man band has been known for putting out somewhat melodic and shoegaze-influenced black metal (ala Xasthur, Leviathan, etc) in the past, on this record the metal is turned down to zero.

There are fastly-picked and melodic black metal guitars and even slight blast beats but it still sounds more like an indie rock record. There are NO growled or screamed vocals on this whole CD, thankfully!

So...for black metal fans who are yearning for something a little different...and shoegaze or indie fans who are looking to do likewise, BUY THIS CD!!! I found it to be very refreshing.

4.0 out of 5 stars BLACK Metal?!?? May 28, 2010
Format:Audio CD
First thing first: yes, this IS an amazing release. An updating,if you will,of the "shoegazing" genre that more-or-less peaked in the late 1990's. One of my personal favorites of the last several years, for sure.Seems the French are REALLY shining in music and films these days, this release is further proof of that claim.

Now with that out of the way, I felt I needed to comment on the "Black Metal" aspects of this release I keep hearing from various sources - this is as close to Black Metal as,say,Jesus and Mary Chain! "Loveless"-era My Bloody Valentine is more METAL than this!! Please dont take this as an attempt to detract one from purchasing,as this is GREAT music.Just know what you ARENT getting yourself into!
