Book Description

January 2003
This beautifully bound trade paperback edition is the same print size and quality as a hardcover, yet without the hardcover price! Robert Stanek won acclaim for his action packed stories, believable dialogue, and well-developed characters. Now Stanek delivers the suspense thriller of his career in Sovereign Rule. The Cold War is over, the U.S.S.R. is no more, the Berlin Wall is gone, but the Agency didn't close its doors, its agents simply went on to other things and new adversaries emerged along with a new world order. Newspapers talk of a world financial crisis, turbulent markets, governments failing, people losing everything. But no one is really paying attention to what's actually happening. The real reason for the chaos of the markets is something former Agent Scott Evers knows more about than he should and getting too close to the truth cost the lives of his operations team. His only advantage is that he went on the run before they could get him but his luck's about to change. He sees them waiting for him, wondering which will take him first, knowing that in the end it may not matter because the result will be the same: gunshots. Two bodies, his and one of theirs. He wonders if there is some other way out, but he doesn't see any alternatives. Sovereign rule is absolute. If you know too much, you must pay and the price is your life. If they kill Scott, there's no one left between them and us. America's future and the world's will be in their hands. Sovereign Rule: A tautly told and suspenseful thriller from bestselling author Robert Stanek. Packed with twists and turns, this is Stanek at his best.

More About the Author

I'm Robert Stanek, and I've been writing stories for nearly 30 years. Though I've always been a writer at heart, I never set out to be a writer. What I wanted to be, I didn't know when I said goodbye to high school. What I wanted to do though, I knew that: I wanted to see the world--and so I did while serving my country in distant lands.

I wrote novels for more than ten years before I ever tried to get published. My big break came with a book about publishing--only a different sort of publishing than you may be thinking. The book was about web publishing and so my career in writing began. While I wrote those other books, I wrote many, many stories and books for my kids, and I collected them for a few decades, until at my children's urging I set out to get them published for others to enjoy.

I am the second youngest of five children, raised by a single mom. While stationed in Hawaii with the U.S. Air Force and working shift work, I went back to school and earned my bachelor's and master's degrees from Hawaii Pacific University. After an 11-year career in the military, I moved with my wife and children to Washington State. When I'm not writing, I can be found playing video games, reading books, or trekking the great outdoors in search of adventure with my wife and children.

It's been a fairly open secret I also write as William Stanek. You can learn more about me at http://www.robertstanek.com or at http://stanek.reagentpress.com. Find me on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/RobertStanekAuthor.

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't believe the advertising, March 20, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Sovereign Rule (Paperback)
The most extraordinary thing about this book is the claim in "About the Author" that "readers agree that Robert's books are among the best they've ever read." This book is disastrously bad. There is no character development, and the twisted conspiracy is never explained or resolved. The plot, to the extent the book can be said to have one, is nothing more but series of location changes that link together sparsely described action scenes and revelations that each character is not what he/she seems to be. Perhaps this is a post-modern style of writing that I don't appreciate, since the book seems to follow the TV genre of conspiracy shows -- like La Femme Nikita and Alias-- which unashamedly move from one inconsistent plot line to another, and seem to be based on the premise that a constant series of betrayals and twists can substitute for logical development of a plot or story.

2.0 out of 5 stars breathless pacing but no plot, September 20, 2004
This review is from: Sovereign Rule (Paperback)
Stanek is a skillful writer of action scenes but the plot is absent. It is like Brownian motion or minimalist music: you can stop or start at any point and the ceaseless movement will carry you forward to, what? For good plots read the "old-fashioned writers" like Le Carre and Robert Barnard or newer ones like Robert Wilson. At least you will care what happens to the hero or heroine.

1.0 out of 5 stars Absolute waste of time, July 18, 2004
This review is from: Sovereign Rule (Paperback)
Let's get straight to the point -- this book is awful. Save your money, and more importantly, your precious time. This author has no ability to develop characters, and the plot disappears 10 pages into the book. By page 20, the reader is left to look for continuity -- and behold, there is none. This is an amateurish book at best!

And puh-leeze, there is absolutely no comparison between this author and his work and Dan Brown, Patterson, etc. ....and anybody who is giving favorable praise to this book was probably paid by the author.
