Book Description

August 1, 1999
The Sovereign Stone Game System is an exciting new role-playing game created by some of the top designers in the RPG industry. The game is skill-based, using various die types for Skill and Attribute rolls. The world in which the game takes place is a medieval fantasy world created by fantasy artist Larry Elmore in conjuction with NY Times best-selling authors Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman. Sovereign Stone novels by Weis and Hickman will be coming out in the year 2000 from Harper/Prism. Elves, orks, humans and dwarves are PCs, with some interesting new twists to these standard fantasy races. Elves follow a Samurai-like code of honor. Dwarves are pony-riding hordes bent on world conquest. Orks are technologists and superstitious sailors. Humans are the most varied, with several distinct kingdoms, giving a range of characters from powerful knights to barbarians. Magic is available to all races and walks of life. Magic is rare, difficult to wield, but extremely powerful. The heroes are Dominion Lords, powerful and magical paladins dedicated to good. The villains are anti-paladins, undead knights dedicated to the Void who must kill to maintain their unholy existence. The world is in turmoil, as forces loyal to the Lord of the Void, the demigod Dagnarus, seek to conquer Loerem. Join those who seek to stop them--or to at least take advantage of the dire situation!

Editorial Reviews

From the Back Cover

A World In Peril: A savage army marches out of the west. Its soldiers--the monstrous and terrifying Taan--have never before been seen on this continent. Dark rumors whisper that the army is being led by the evil Dagnarus, Lord of the Void, dead for two hundred years. His captains are Vrykyl, fearsome undead who long ago traded life for horrible immortality. The nations of Loerem--realms of the Humans, the Elves, the Dwarves and and the Orks--are too involved in warring with each other to pay much attention to this new threat. But throughout the world, heroes from every race have seen the dark clouds gather. They are arming themselves with sorcery and with steel to meet the coming challenge. Join them . . . if you dare. The Game at a Glance Skill based system, each skill and attribute is listed as a die type, ie: d8 in strength. Actions are rolled with an attribute die and a skill die. A character can exert for an extra die, but at the cost of stun points. Magic is rolled with an attribute die and a skill die, too. You need to achieve a number of points and the spell goes off. If you don't reach it in one turn, you add your next turn's roll. The world has Orks, Elves, Humans and Dwarves as player races, as well as a few new ones, and a really nasty set of villains! The Orks are a sea-faring race, advantaged in water magic. The Elves are a medieval Japanese-like race, advantaged in air magic. The Dwarves are a nomadic Mongol-like race, advantaged in fire magic. The Humans are mid-European medieval-like, advantaged in earth magic. The Taan, the void magic users, are just plain wicked!

4.0 out of 5 stars Cool game, but the book is a little disorganized, January 16, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Sovereign Stone Game System (Paperback)
The format of the book is obviously targeting new/beginning players, but you will need moderately experienced game master to smooth over some of its rought spots, confusing editing mistakes, and occasional omissions (Make sure to visit sovstone to get sample characters and character sheets). Sovereign Stone is an excellent idea for a game, but the book itself scatters essential information throughout the book, making it a bit confusing at first and --later on-- difficult to find essential info quickly (We made some cheat-sheets which collected the essential info for character generation onto a couple of pages, and a couple of pages for the GM). The game rules are fairly abstract, but that allows you to focus on the Role-Playing aspects of the game. So far in our mixed gaming group of beginning and advanced players, the system seems quite playable (combat goes quick, not too many rules to remember, and based on sound statistical properties) and enjoyable as a RPG. However, if you really like nitty-gritty details, lots of tables (a la RoleMaster(tm)), or hex-maps you should choose a different game. Overall, I think that Elmore and Weis are creating an interesting world with lots of Fantasy role-playing possibilities. Now, if the game designers can just get their thoughts a bit better organized, they will have a truely great combination.

5.0 out of 5 stars I've played this RPG and I LOVE it!, October 9, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Sovereign Stone Game System (Paperback)
I've played lots of role-playing games, including AD&D and I never really understood why I was rolling the dice or which dice I was supposed to role. This game uses the various die in a logical manner that is extremely easy to remember, yet provides for complicated and in-depth play. An excellent RPG for beginning GMs and players. Experienced players will find that it allows for more game play and less rules mongering.
