5.0 out of 5 stars cant belive i finally found this
We've had a recording of this chorus all thru the cold war years when it was almost subversive. Unfortunatley our turntable gave out and we had to enter the CD age. I had almost given up hope when i chanced on this at amazon. We are etermnally grateful. This is some of the most soulful music ever recorded , whatever your politics.

1.0 out of 5 stars Great music, buy the other edition
This CD offers 17 tracks of terrific Red Army chorus music. However, if you buy the EMI reissue, you will receive everything on this disc plus five additionsl tracks at a much lower price.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bone-chilling, as stirring as bagpipes!, December 29, 2002
I was delighted to find this CD; I had the original 33 RPM record when it first came out while in college in the mid-1950's, and it is rather well worn, the old turn-table has been stored (somewhere) for years, and I'm happy to replace it with a CD. jlw

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding!, August 26, 2005
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I first discovered this album as a LP in the late 1960s. Granted, the recording techniques then are not as sophisticated as they are now, but the quality of the voices on this CD is excellent, and the music will send chills down your spine.

There are subsequent albums of the "Red Army" (whom I've seen in person) -- while good, the original "Soviet" is still the best.

If you love great soloists, outstanding choral work, and stirring music, you will appreciate this album.

5.0 out of 5 stars Soviet Army's last tribute to its failed empire!, October 15, 2000
By A Customer
This is considered to be the finest collection of the Soviet Army Chorus and Band repertoire, and, one can say, its final victory! Few military or marching bands could ever approach the vitality and intensity of the legendary Soviet Army band, once known as the infamous Red Army. The rousing sound has once inspired the Soviet soldier and put fear into those who had no choice but to listen. Although the band still exists today, it has few praises to sing and little to sing about. Today, Soviet army recordings, beltbuckles, hats, and medals stir up more interest in flea markets and on eBay. This nostalgic collection, the last hurrah of a broken empire, is a treasure to be cherished by every military buff of every persuasion under the sun.

5.0 out of 5 stars This will have a song you will like, January 19, 2000

Very good music; wide variety. All sung with great passion and spirit. Even my 3-yr. old son loves it and can hardly sit still while it plays. I, too, get caught up in the rhythm, particularly in "The Decembrists."

This is the best performance of human voice I have ever heard. I am listening uninterrupted since receiving it. It is yet the second day, but I think I will listen to it for years.

5.0 out of 5 stars A welcome reissue., February 18, 2001
This is, as far as I can gather, a reissue of a 2 volume EMI release of the 1960s vintage. I've had the 2nd volume of this set for year and the vinal was getting awfully worn - then I found this! By far some of the best martial chorial performances you'll ever find.

5.0 out of 5 stars Memories of the past, February 12, 2007
My parents bought the vinyl recording of the Album when it first came out and I used to listen to it a lot. It is wonderful to have it available on CD without the scratches that go along with records. They sound as brilliant and stirring as the first day I heard them. I especially love The Soldiers Chorus from the play The Decembrists.

If Poem about the Ukraine doesn't make you want to sign up, nothing will. If you got chill bumps watching Hunt for Red October, you've got to hear this album and find out what sort of blood runs through the Russian veins.
