This review is from: Soviet Athletes:Winter Sports [VHS] (VHS Tape)
These are propaganda films in a pure and tragic sense: They promote and inspire belief in a system that ultimately could not work. For any serious student of history or politics, knowing the viewpoint of the other side is essential to fully understand what is truly going on - these films are a rare look at that "other side."
This tape introduces some of the most bizarre sports competitions known to man, including a polo-like game where teams fight over a heavy dead goat. Where else are you going to see that?
The Soviet Union is a cold place, temperature-wise - no doubt about it. They've learned to play in the cold, however, and many of their sports are revealed for the first time in these programs. The vigorous coaching techniques that make Soviet athletes champions are documented thoroughly.
Includes original Soviet propaganda films Patterns On Ice & Traditional Sports of the Soviet People.
Note: These films were produced by Soviet filmmakers under the control and supervision of the Soviet government. They is being made available on home video in the United States through an arrangement with The Society for Cultural Relations, U.S./U.S.S.R. - a non-profit group established by the Soviet and the American people after World War II. These films may be considered a work of Soviet Propaganda.
Many of the films are one-of-a-kind, exported from the Soviet Union to the United States in various conditions. Each film is presented in its entirety, without editing. The producers of this video ask you to "forgive the blemishes in return for the opportunity to view rare historical programming."
