Editorial Reviews

Review

“Three frequent collaborators have joined again to assemble a thorough and necessarily lengthy anthology of essays about the erstwhile Soviet Union's foreign policy… This volume has become much more appropriate to history courses, but will still have value for students who need to see how scholars struggled to interpret the behavior of the Soviet Union in world affairs.”

D. N. Nelson, Choice

This book is, of course, dated, since the Soviet Union collapsed at the end of the year in which it was published. In a way, however, this makes the book more valuable since it covers virtually the complete period of the USSR's existence. Also, it contains a variety of views by various authors. While the communist world is no longer the threat to world peace that it was, the world now faces the threat of jihadist terror. The West is making some of the same mistakes it made in dealing with communism, and some of the same issues apply to terrorism as applied to communism. While reading this book, if the reader will put in some thought as to parallels with the world today, it can be doubly informative.
