The book is on post-World War 2 Soviet Tactical Aviation (1946-1990). It explains the relationship between the different models of aircraft, when and which units used them. Fully 1/3 of the book is on Afghan operations.

And for a book by Yefim Gordon, it has an index!

The book is filled with many photos of various aircraft used by the Soviets during the era of the Cold War. In particular, the book focuses on planes of the Tactical Aviation section of the Soviet Air Force (fighters, fighter/bombers, ground attack, interceptors, etc). There are numerous color plates of the planes and their variants that would be quite helpful to modelers looking for that extra detail. There are also various bits of information that give insight on the development and use of the planes.

The surprising omission is that there is no standardized, quick listing of important stats for the aircraft available. In a book about planes, one would expect to have stats like max speed, service ceiling, armament configurations, fuel capacity, range, etc all quickly available in some formatted list so that anyone reading the book can look at these stats easily especially for comparison purposes. For some reason, this is missing. You have to try to find that information somewhere in the text or captions and sometimes you may find that info at all. The formatting is also a bit out of synch in that the text on a page could be talking about the MiG-23, but all the pictures on that page and the next several pages after are all pictures of another aircraft. If you're looking for a book that can serve as a quick reference on stats, this book will not provide that to you. However, if you are looking for some more in-depth information on development, deployment, and use then you'll probably be happy with what is presented here.

The book is heavy since they are using some nice quality paper and the book in general looks very well done.

This book provided answers to questions I've long had on Soviet Tactical(or Frontal) Aviation. The chapter on its role in the war in Afghanistan was a real eye opener. A must read for Cold War Buffs.

If you bought this book as a companion to "Russian Strategic Aviation Today"....Beware. This book is on the HISTORY of Soviet tactical aviation and is not focused on the modern forces. I should have paid more attention and noticed the title said "Soviet" rather than "Russian" and realized there hasn't been a Soviet Union for quite awhile. As a history, it looks pretty good.
