Very interesting!, August 20, 2010
This review is from: Sowerby: Works for Organ and Orchestra (Audio CD)
This CD was a pleasant surprise. I've been doing some studying on American composers from the 20th century and I stumbled onto Leo Sowerby. He's known primarily for his sacred organ and choral compositions. Until this CD, I had only heard his choral works (which are beautiful). If you like his choral music, then you'll like his organ concerto. I thought it was really quite nice. His style of writing is reminiscent of a movie out of the 30s or 40s. I enjoyed it very much and I've found myself humming bits of it throughout the day. The remainder of the CD is great too. However, the concerto is my favorite work on the album-Sowerby creates such interesting sonorities with the orchestra/organ combination. This is definitely a great album if you're interested in American music.
