February 17 2006
I did some research online and read people's review then decided to buy this soy milk machine. I know all the time that soy is very good to people's health especially for women so I had great expectation that this thing would work out. I ordered online from their own website and got it after 1 week. It was much bigger that I had imagined. Back in China, my mom used to use a handy soymaker. Anyway, I used it 3 times and it was good. Just that the soymilk didn't taste as fully cooked. Also washing the machine is a bit complicated since the head (where the electric parts are)is undetachable from the grinding part. So you need to hold the heavy head when washing the grinding part. You need to be very careful not to splash water onto the head. It's a bit tricky. At the 4th usage, it only heated up without grinding at all so we pretty much harvest whole boiled beans. I called the company to fix it but they said I have to pay the mailing. Even though I found online that they have a retailer in my city but they insisted that I mail it back. Also if I still decide to return it later after fixing it, the 30 day warranty won't be extended. It still starts from the date of purchase, not from the date after you fix it. So I decided to return it for refund anyway. I paid $20+ for the mailing. Another thing I found out about the manual is that, there is inconsitency among different language versions. One version says "push the grind button 3 times", the other versions says "push the grind button 4 times". I don't know which one to follow. It's quite a lesson to learn. Well, I'll have to look for my soy machine again. I didn't the machine from Amazon so I wouldn't know if the experience would be different if I did. March 21, 2006 This is a follow up of my previous review for this soymilk maker. I returned the machine and wrote the review here in February. The supervisor of the customer service called me after he saw the online review. He said according to their policy, in case the machine is broken, they should pay for the shipping. The lady who handled my case has worked there for 1+ year but was oblivious of this policy. He also offered to give me a completely new machine with 2 year warranty as a compliment. Well, I tried the new machine out and it is working good. Now I've got the refund for the previous machine as well as the $20 shipping. I guess I should give them a second chance of proving themselves.

Easy to use/good results,

I have made many, many batches of soy milk with this machine and had no problems. I have made tofu as well with excellent results. It has more than paid already because we drink a good amount of soy milk. The milk is not quite the same as "silk" because I don't sweeten mine at all, but I have gotten used to it. The machine comes with suggestions for adding sweeteners and other flavors as well.

I use this at least 4x per week and it makes consistently great soymilk with ease. Not too hard to clean, and mine came with a tofu press, tofu coagulator, sample soybeans and instructions. It's heavy, durable and looks like it will stand up to hard use over a period of years.

Control of flavor tailors to the taste of different people,

I bought this product from the maker's website and it came sooner than I'd expected. The filter cup was damaged when it arrive and I'd e-mail the site about it. Customer service's reply came faster than I'd expected and my filter cup was replaced. But after weeks of waiting for it to arrive, I e-mailed customer service again and they sent another one by air-mail because the first one might have been lost and that impressed me.
Our house use to buy about six or seven gallons of soymilk per week (I'm Asian and actually liked soymilk more than milk before I was became a vegan); and while this soymilk maker is handy, I was disappoint at how much soymilk is actually made given the size of the product. When I was first washing the soymilk maker, I found the filter cup to be hardest to detach and wash but it's a little easier with practice. The soymilk itself is more grainy than I'd expected given how smooth I've read it is in other reviews. I think I've read somewhere on the site that if smoother soymilk is desired, a gold filter should be used but I don't know which to buy so I just filter it again with the broken filter cup (so I don't have to worry about clogging) and that helps. The user manuel is really helpful and it even came with an instructional DVD for lazy readers like my brother. The head is a bit heavier than I would like and is tricky to wash but it has gotten easier with time. My mom loves drinking it because she can control the flavor (or lack of). I experiment with blending the soymilk with different fruits [blueberries and soymilk don't mix well and one should drink it instead of leaving it waiting around]; the results are better than expected. Overall, this product makes it easy to have soymilk and I think it is worth it. I won't write about all the good points because the list is too long and the soyquick website has all that.

This is a good soymilk maker. My friend bought it. I searched the web and bought the exact same machine from a US distributor at $10 less. It has a different brand name (soyajoy) but exactly same machine because we compared the two machine in every detail. I always make sure I search the net to get the best price.

Machine functions flawlessly,

This machine works without a hitch. The big concern is that the milk tastes "beanier" than commercial soymilk, but with good bean prep and a little rice in the mix (as well as ginger, flax, and other nice additives) we were able to settle on recipes we like better than commercial soymilk (and MUCH cheaper and with a whole lot less sugar). If you want to make soymilk at home, this is the machine.

Disappointing,

As a longtime vegan, I was looking forward to owning one of these. Unfortunately, the 'milk' it generated -- despite numerous recipes and types (soy, nut, rice) -- was disappointing. Not undrinkable, but not anything like your standard store brands. Worse, however, is the maintenance the thing needs: it requires a lot of very intricate scrubbing, and if you don't do it *immediately* after making a batch, it becomes nearly impossible to clean. Particularly annoying is the filter basket, which they claim *must* be completely clean, but which has holes so tiny this task is nearly impossible (and uses a disappointing amount of water, energy, etc).
In any case, be *certain* that you are willing to live with this item's disadvantages before purchasing. The company claims a '30-day money-back guarantee' free trial period; what they don't reveal to you is that even though they ship the product to you from within the US, if you wish to return the item, it must be sent to Canada. With the weight of the item, this will cost a *minimum* of $25 -- which is a pretty pricey 'trial'.

I am very happy with my soy milk maker. It has been easy to use and trouble free thus far. My first attempts at making the milk turned out good but since then I have found some better recipes from the company's website. It seems the milk comes out less beanie tasting if after making the milk, you strain it through a cheese cloth. Now if I can just find a recipe for soy creamer I will be very happy.
I definitely recommend this machine.

I use this soy milk maker at least twice a week. It has always performed exactly as advertised. I have used it to make almond milk as well and it performed wonderfully that way, too! The only problem that I have is that when I received my soy milk maker, I sent off for the tofu coagulant and press but I have never received them. Must have gotten lost in the mail.

I love making soymilk at home and this machine has made it so simple! (Used to do it manually by a normal blender and stovetop cooking) I usually make 2 batch back to back. 2-3 times a week.
The cleaning part is the only thing that annoys me :( If you don't wash it well (almost immediately), the brew basket will get clogged and you'll end up getting soy and water (separate), not soymilk. I use bottle cleaner or toothbrush to clean the mesh basket. If your basket gets clogged up (more than 35% of the holes are clogged) you can immerse it in Bleach (100%, not diluted, this fix was recommended by their customer support) It worked and I didn't really smell the bleach after a good wash afterward :) *7/13/08* So I've had this machine for over two years now and it's still working and kicking! I also use the same old basket over and over too. I only used Bleach to clean it once when I didn't wash the basket immediately. *9/29/10* Just got back from a 7 months long business trip and started to use my beloved Soyquick again. Two batches came out too light to consume (like water) because I used "TOO MUCH" beans in the basket, I packed them down way too tight (hoping for very thick soymilk). Once I adjusted the amount of beans, the milk came out perfect and always...delicious! :) I still use the same pot and the same basket the came in the box! |
