More About the Author

Nathan Kross is a scholar and historian who achieved some renown with his first book, "Find Your Perfect Mate: A Manual of Practical Phrenology." Recently his life has fallen into shambles as the result of the prophesied discovery of a lost manuscript, now published under the title "The Supervillain Sonnets." He is currently working on an epic poem entitled "The Canterbury Tales In Space," as well as writing reviews of indy poetry books on Amazon.

What a fantastic idea, not only to modernize Chaucer's beloved Canterbury Tales, but to take it well into the future, into space in the year 3001. The space pilgrims, on their way to Alpha Centauri, will pass the time with a story-telling competition. The Space Admiral, who mirrors Chaucer's Knight, tells the first tale (in four parts) of two warring factions with major weapons that could kill a moon: Jupitron from the East (a kingdom with an enormous space fleet) and Saturnia from the West (a democratic nation of traders and philosophers whose weapons and fleet are just as strong). This sets up an action-packed tale in which two knights, renowned pilots from each faction, represent their respective nations with honor and valor. What follows is fast-paced and surprising tale told with all the charm and humor that Kross showed in his Supervillain Sonnets. Unlike Chaucer's iambic pentameter, The Space Admiral's Tale is told in playful octosyllabic couplets, skillfully handled by the author, creating a faster, fluent work that is easy to read and enjoy -- and is very modern. There's no General Prologue yet, so we know little about the Space Admiral other than the bits and pieces we can glean from his tale. But this reader and Chaucer fan is looking forward to more of this work and urges readers to support this fabulous and extremely ambitious idea. Any writer who seeks to combine art with a potentially wide commercial appeal deserves encouragement, in my opinion. What's coming next or how long writing something like this could take is impossible to know, but I really enjoyed this first achievement and look forward to more installments. If you feel intimidated at all by the poetry or don't or remember much about Chaucer, don't worry. It doesn't matter. Just try out the sample and see for yourself how much fun and joy and excitement this kind of writing can deliver when done properly. You'll be glad that you did.
