Grade 8-10 Taylor may have intended to present an even-handed review of current and possible future military uses of space and the debate over U.S. policy, but his results resemble the disarray of his subject. This is a revision of the 1983 edition, but whole chapters have been reset with errors intact. Where chapters have been rewritten (except to replace the horror vision of the USSR shooting down the Space Shuttle with a more abstract description of the rea sons for SDI), they are still not com pletely up-to-date. Often old para graphs are simply shuffled around and a few new paragraphs inserted with no attention to the odd shifts in attitude this presents. Thus the optimistic chap ter on the Space Shuttle is shortened but not reworded; then a strange, in conclusive chapter ``After the Chal lenger'' added. All of this is written in half-digested bureaucratese, occasion ally broken up by dark black-and-white photos or drawings of things with at least tangential relevance to the subject matter. Libraries with the 1983 edition will do better to keep it than replace it. At least the 1983 copyright date gives fair warning of the contents.Marga ret Chatham, formerly at Smithtown Library, N.Y.
