I started my 4 X gaming way back with Masters of Orion and Masters of Orion II. I have also played Space Empires IV extensively. Space Empires V has great epic potential that it almost lives up to.
I think this game is fantastic! The graphics may be a little dated but very, very good. You can customize you game at start up in almost any way imaginable (game size, number of maximum units, etc). You also have a very detailed ship customization screen to create units, bases, and troops. The interaction and treaty section is fun - if you make a treaty, read the elements of it because if you tell one race you won't bomb a planet, you can't bomb anyone's planet. One of the great strengths of this game is its customization. There are many websites where you can download different races, ship designs, maps and game editors. The game files can also be edited manually as they are .TXT files. I did this extensively in Space Empires IV and am working on this on Space Empires V. This allows you to make a game totally unique for your play. The space battles are visually stunning and you can run battles in a simulator to see how they compare to other units in the game. I really can not think what else the creators could have added to this game as every aspect of customizable play is accounted for.

It is simple to learn, but there is plenty of room for depth. A few mechanics are strange, clunky, or over-simplified, but it is still easily the best out there.
