5.0 out of 5 stars Best Space Strategy Game! October 25, 2010
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
I've played a lot of space strategy games and this is by far the most detailed game I have ever played! This game covers: building construction, technology research, fleets, planetary colonization, space battles, ship construction, ship upgrades, solar exploration, alien interactions, alien conquest, alien research, and more that I haven't done in the year that I've played this game. If you don't like the formation of your fleet --you can modify it. If you don't like the order your ships warp trough a warp point--you can change it. If you don't like the weapon configuration of a ship you can change it. The playable elements of this game are hugely modifiable compared to other games! The music soundtrack is awesome for this game and the ship battles can be seen in 1 of 2 different modes. I always use the 3D simulated mode so I can interactively control my ships. And, as the previous review mentioned, you 'have to' download and install the patches for this game. This will definitely enhance game-play. Some other game-site reviews mention glitches or screen 'flashing,' which I also experienced. I found that Adobe automatic updates was messing with Windows in the background. I disabled Adobe automatic updates and haven't had a problem since. All-in-all, this is a great game for the price!

4.0 out of 5 stars The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly December 22, 2010

Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly

I started my 4 X gaming way back with Masters of Orion and Masters of Orion II. I have also played Space Empires IV extensively. Space Empires V has great epic potential that it almost lives up to.

The Good
I think this game is fantastic! The graphics may be a little dated but very, very good. You can customize you game at start up in almost any way imaginable (game size, number of maximum units, etc). You also have a very detailed ship customization screen to create units, bases, and troops. The interaction and treaty section is fun - if you make a treaty, read the elements of it because if you tell one race you won't bomb a planet, you can't bomb anyone's planet. One of the great strengths of this game is its customization. There are many websites where you can download different races, ship designs, maps and game editors. The game files can also be edited manually as they are .TXT files. I did this extensively in Space Empires IV and am working on this on Space Empires V. This allows you to make a game totally unique for your play. The space battles are visually stunning and you can run battles in a simulator to see how they compare to other units in the game. I really can not think what else the creators could have added to this game as every aspect of customizable play is accounted for.

The Bad
This game can get really involved and depending on setting, can be a micromanaging nightmare on a large or gigantic game. This can be alleviated somewhat by using the minister's settings. They can control a lot of building, colonization, and exploring tasks.

The Ugly
And I do mean UGLY. Let me point out that I am using an older system (Pentium 3 - 2.8 gigahertz with 1.

4.0 out of 5 stars Best Space Strategy On the Market October 19, 2010
Verified Purchase
Fun: 4.0 out of 5 stars
This is, by far, the best space strategy game. Be sure you patch it, otherwise it is very glitchy.
It is simple to learn, but there is plenty of room for depth. A few mechanics are strange, clunky, or over-simplified, but it is still easily the best out there.
