A Nice Finale, March 9, 2006
This review is from: Space: 1999 Eternity Unbound (Paperback)
"Eternity Unbound" takes the chacracter of Balor of Progon to the ultimate level. His past was merely touched upon in the "End of Eternity" episode. A lot more could have been done if it weren't for the episode's time constraints. In addition, the end of the episode left the idea of a return visit wide open. Latham has done an excellent job in expanding Balor's story into a full-blown epic. The character had such potential that it seemed like a shame that it hadn't been further expanded upon during the show's run. What may have been perceived as just another one of the many beings encountered by Alpha has now been turned into a man who has left a more lasting impression. This is a story that should be truly enjoyed by any fan of the series.

New Dimension To A Year One Space:1999 Favourite!, March 26, 2006
This review is from: Space: 1999 Eternity Unbound (Paperback)
When Johnny Byrne wrote the first season episode END OF ETERNITY, he created a chilling and memorable character in the psychopathic Balor.
Byrne himself always felt the episode lacked a little extra - some substance to 'flesh it out' and to explain how Balor came to be what he was. In his earlier novel RESURRECTION, Latham brought Balor back to Alpha, and the Alphans battled him again.
ETRNITY UNBOUND is the extra dimension that Johnny Byrne always wanted for his original episode. William Latham has taken his original RESURRECTION novel and expanded it into a three part epic. First, a brand new account of Balor of how Balor became who he became - from his childhood on Progron, through adulthood and his progression into a psychopath. And all possibly sparked by being spurned in love.....!
The second part is an expanded novelisation of Byrne's original teleplay, which is rather more satisfying than the truncated version written in 1975 by EC Tubb for the original Space:1999 Year One novelisations. And lastly - with all the new information and background to hand - Latham recounts his RESURRECTION story...the last battle of wills and wits between Alpha and possibly their most ruthless and homicidal protagonist.
Any enemy can be eventually defeated if you are cunning and tenacious and choose your weapons and friends carefully; this is a dark but gripping story. If you like Space:1999 and wanted to see it 'expand' beyond the confines of a tv screen, and to see the show as a psychological thriller with elements of horror as well as science fiction, you may well like to read this novel. Its an engrossing and exciting read, but perhaps more dense and challenging than you might expect from a tv novelisation.
Space:1999 as it might have been in a later time-slot maybe!
And I hear there are other Space:1999 novels from Powys Media yet to come.....
Recommended.

A Lot More Than The TV Episode, October 31, 2008
This review is from: Space: 1999 Eternity Unbound (Paperback)
The TV episode of the End of Eternity was a great one, however, it left its viewer a feeling of wanting to know more about the main character, Balor. This book did such a great job in creating a background for Balor - you may not be sympathetic to this psychopath, but at least you feel that you understand why he is who he is. The return of Balor to Moonbase Alpha has an excellent plot and was nicely written. If you like the Space 1999 series (especially if you liked the End of Eternity Episode), you will definitely love this book. Even if you have never watched that TV series, this book, as a stand along book, is an excellent read, too.
