If you're like me, you're probably pining away about the lack of new My Bloody Valentine material. You probably also remember the days of yore when Lush played huge walls of guitar sound and vocals were secondary. Well, there will probably never be a new M.B.V. record, and Lush is long departed... what's a shoegazer lovin' geek to do?Dip into the Telstar Ponies. Domestic, all their albums are out of print. But they are worth tracking down. Especially this one. "In the Space of a Few Minutes" is pure old-skool shoegazer circa 1995. Loud, spacious, and chock full of texture and atmosphere that's thicker than a milkshake. This is the real stuff. The layers of sound.... ooooohhhh.... the layers. Absolutely gorgeous. The Telstar Ponies ride that fine line that shoegazing bands often do.... Noise vs. Melody. But the Ponies toe the line like champs. Which is not to say that the entire album is just in your face noise and feedback... it's got its share of slow droners like "moon, don't come up tonight", and then the big noise freakouts like "two's insane" and "monster". A damn perfect album. In my humble opinion. It's not "Loveless".... but it'll do more than enough. |
