It is hard to resist the retro charms of video games of the past, which is why a lot of these titles are coming back to life on modern platforms. Activision's revamp of Space Invaders treads lightly on the hallowed ground of the original point-and-shoot alien game. Even the pregame film clip pays homage to the simple 1978 version. While based heavily on a game that is over 20 years old, this newer version contains enough newer gaming elements to re-energize the classic into a contemporary contender.

In particular, the addition of 3-D graphics brings new life to this well-traveled game, though it is odd to play without the now-infamous pixilated square enemies creeping toward the bottom of the screen. There are also a wider variety of enemy ships, guns, special powers, mother ships, and squadron formations to contend with. You can try your luck on your own, or get a second player to help you during combat, which is great for players with short attention spans. There are plenty of chances to gain extra lives, which helps those of us who lost more than a few quarters on this game at the arcade. Space Invaders is perfect if you don't want to play a game with a long, drawn-out plot. --Carrie Bell

I LOVED THE OLD '' SPACE INVADERS '' GAME AS A KID . AND SPENT MANY AN HOUR AT THE LOCAL ARCADE . SO I SNATCHED THIS UP AS SOON AS I SAW IT IN THE STORE . I HAVEN'T HAD SO MUCH FUN PLAYING A SPACE GAME IN AGES ! THE GRAPHICS ARE REALLY COOL- AND YOU GET LOTS OF DIFFERENT TYPES OF SHIPS TO DESTROY. PLUS AS A BONUS- YOU CAN DESTROY MOTHER SHIPS THAT PASS BY , IN ORDER TO GET EXTRA LIVES OR SPECIAL POWERUPS . THIS MAKES DESTROYING ENEMY SHIPS ALL THE MORE FUN !AND THERE ARE EVEN ENEMY SHIPS THAT HAVE THEIR OWN DEADLY COUNTERATTACKS .NOT TO MENTION LOTS OF COOL BOSSES TO FIGHT !! I saw this game last year, but for some reason I didn't pick it up. I thought it would be one of retro games where the gameplay is entirely revamped, but boy was I wrong. Has the game changed? Yes, but for the better. I would say it's more of an enhacement than a change. The greatest thing that Activision has done to this game was to keep the hyper-addictive gameplay that made the original like a magnet for my quarters. I LOVE THIS GAME!

A nice feature in this game is 2 players can play simultaneously. Also the alien creature you fight are different looking and after you hit so many of a particular creature in a row you get a special power bomb that has different explosive capabilites. Even though the game gets a little monotenous, it has enough to keep you interested. The old game is even embedded if you want to play the classic. After viewing the old one, I can't believe why millions of us ever pumped quarter after quarter into those old arcade machines after you see the remake. I highly recommend, it is fun for all ages.
