A new classic in thereminic music,

This review is from: Space Age Love Songs (Audio CD)
What a wonderful album of cool, hip, lounge music played beautifully on the theremin by Dr. Robby Virus, with the delightful vocals of Lola Bombay. This is a must for lovers of theremins or lounge and it's the ultimate if you're perspicacious enough to appreciate both. Together with Magical Moods of the Theremin, we have the next chapter in the history of this underappreciated instrument, and worthy successors to the ground-breaking works of Rockmore and Kavina.

Okay... so they have a theremin! That doesn't mean that turning "Moon River" into a theremin solo is a good idea. It sounds like Mrs Miller humming the tune. I think what Dr Samuel Hoffman had in his 1950s theremin excursions was subtlety... he didn't dominate the proceedings. The problem here is that this exotic instrument is so upfront that it gets a little obnoxious after a while. The song selection is great but I'd recommend getting the original versions. Remember those 90s retro "swing" bands like "Royal Crown Revue"? They meant well but were no Dorsey, Miller or Goodman. PP is the "lounge/exotica" answer to that particular extravaganza. If you like Don Tiki then you will probably like these guys. My high hopes for this rather expensive cd were dashed about two thirds of the way through. Try it by all means...but on your own head be it!
