A really entertaining and thoughtful book,
By
This review is from: Space Music (Paperback)
I sat down with Space Music one afternoon earlier this week. Except for dinner and a show, I didn't take a break. I thought it was OUTSTANDING. It grabbed my attention from the first page and didn't let it go until the last. I thought the way Jack interwove personal stories and poems was masterful. I was floored at the amount of detail and recall. I found myself being touched, moved and inspired throughout.
I can see why he needed to write it. It was a story that needed to be told.

Boy did this book bring back some memories! I marched in one of Jack's early horn lines (SCV 1969-1970) when he first came over from the Troopers. I remember Jack and Edie and this huge dog with popsicle sticks taped to his ears crammed into this little red Sunbeam - it was a sight! I just got this book yesterday and burned right through it and boy did it bring back some great memories. When Gail Royer first brought Jack over to SCV we thought he was going to work us like Don Angelica did on his visits. Man, were we in for a shock! Jack instilled discipline into the group where some of the younger kids thought he was mean but overall he vastly cleaned up the horn line his years with SCV. His methods make us a better corps which showed in our jump from 13th place in 1969 to 1st in 1970 (winning American Legion Nationals) which of course is why Gail brought him on board. Your book was a great read and touched on so many people that we marched with and learned from (Fred Sanford, Jim Ott, Jim Jones, etc...). BTW - Edie was a great color guard instructor which made SCV that much better in those days (we all liked her). Great book and best to you and Edie! Jesse J. Amador SCV '66-'72 ABQ, NM

Lessons & memories,
This review is from: Space Music (Paperback)
This is a wonderful memoir of a life and a career and lessons learned along the way. Anyone with even a passing connection to the world of drum and bugle corps will love it, but it really has something to offer everyone about how to learn, to teach, to grow, to live. Not everyone gets to be Jack's student in real life, alas, but reading this book is definitely the next best thing!
