Book Description

0801870682 978-0801870682 November 15, 2002 1

Though more than forty years old, the space age has just begun, and questions about its future abound. What will replace the Space Shuttle? Will the International Space Station justify its $100 billion potential cost? Are asteroids real threats to Earth or just the subject of science fiction movies? Will humans land on Mars? Will the search for extraterrestrial life be rewarded?

In Space Policy in the Twenty-First Century, W. Henry Lambright brings together ten top-ranking observers of United States space exploration to address these and other issues relating to the future of the space program. While the U.S. no longer competes with the Soviets for technological "firsts," they argue, ideology and national image remain at the core of space policy, with other factors playing subordinate roles. Reminding readers of the historical highlights, the authors pose searching questions about the priorities and applications of space science, manned vs. unmanned flights, and commercial access to the space enterprise.

Contributors include: Christopher F. Chyba, SETI Institute and Stanford University; Ronald J. Deibert, University of Toronto; Daniel H. Deudney, the Johns Hopkins University; W. Henry Lambright, Syracuse University; Roger D. Launius, NASA; Karl A. Leib, Syracuse University; John M. Logsdon, George Washington University; Howard E. McCurdy, American University; Scott N. Pace, White House Office of Science and Technology Policy; and Debora L. VanNijnatten, Wilfrid Laurier University.

Editorial Reviews

Review

The subject of policy and the decisions that have to be made andd to understand who will be/are the decision makers is vital for future space progress and development. This book gives us an invaluable insight into the methos and mechanisms involved. Very strongly recommended.

(Richard Taylor Spaceflight 2003)

Although one cannot predict decisions of the future, this book offers an excellent summary of where US space policy is, how it got there, and the political context within which future space policy makers will have to operate.

(Choice )

Space Policy in the Twenty-First Century is an important and timely look at the future of the American space program. These wide-ranging essays come at a critical moment in the unfolding story of mankind's exploration of space, and should be required reading for politicians, policymakers, scientists, and space enthusiasts.

(Buzz Aldrin )

Space Policy in the Twenty-First Century is an original, exciting, and worthy contribution to space policy literature. I am quite impressed.

(W. D. Kay, Northeastern University )

With an uncommon blend of scholarship and readability, ten experts construct compelling arguments for the space-faring future of our dreams. The views are refreshingly informed, yet candid, and are sure to reinvigorate lively debate among us all, straight up to the halls of congress.

(Neil deGrasse Tyson, Astrophysicist and Director, Hayden Planetarium, New York City )

3.0 out of 5 stars Great overview, but overcome by events, July 4, 2008

This review is from: Space Policy in the Twenty-First Century (New Series in NASA History) (Hardcover)
This collection of essays by top space policy and history writers provides excellent background on major issues in civil and commercial space. Among the topics covered are launch capabilities, the prospects for space commerce, the evolution of Earth observation, international cooperation on the space station, exploration of Mars, the potential for asteroid impacts, and the search for extraterrestrial life. For readers interested in these subjects who have not followed space issues closely, this book is very informative and engaging. There are some errors, but they are few and minor.
Despite these favorable remarks, I rate the book only three stars because of something the editor and authors have no control over: the dynamic nature of the subject matter. The book was published in 2003 and the essays - which were the result of a symposium held in spring 2000 - appear to have been finalized in 2001. Although the underlying issues remain essentially the same today, the circumstances in the space community have changed so much in the intervening years that the book is now seriously out of date. Its contents predate the loss of space shuttle Columbia, the initiation of a new space exploration program that includes returning to the Moon, the decision to terminate space shuttle flights after 2010, and many other developments large and small that would significantly affect what these authors would say on these subjects today. Civil and commercial space activities, and the policies underlying them, are exciting and important, but they evolve so quickly that any book like this one is destined to have a short shelf life.
There is still value in what's written here, but not as much as you'd expect from Amazon's price. This is the second reason why this book doesn't rate higher. At this writing, the price is $52, which is quite high for 270 pages of text, and outrageously high for 270 pages of outdated text. If you can find the book discounted to $15 to $20, it's worth it, but don't pay the full price.
