5.0 out of 5 stars Bringing back the glory of Space Rangers 2
How to describe a game as varied and interesting as Space Rangers 2? Take a world with the open-ended quality of Oblivion, throw in some RTS (real time strategy) action, puzzle solving, 3d space combat, an economic system and trading system to rival Trade Winds, and character development and improvement like a role playing game, and you've still only partly described this...

If I could give half stars, this would deserve a 3.5. I had very high hopes for this game, it had been recommended several times to me. Overall. 5.0 out of 5 stars Bringing back the glory of Space Rangers 2, February 28, 2009
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Space Rangers 2: Reboot (CD-ROM)
How to describe a game as varied and interesting as Space Rangers 2? Take a world with the open-ended quality of Oblivion, throw in some RTS (real time strategy) action, puzzle solving, 3d space combat, an economic system and trading system to rival Trade Winds, and character development and improvement like a role playing game, and you've still only partly described this amazing sleeper hit of a game.

The original Space Rangers 2 is back, and with some notable improvements. First, many new maps have been added, as well as new units, graphical elements, and an increase in difficulty over all. Second, and so very welcome, is that the game is now a Stardock release, meaning it ships DRM free!

If you missed this game the first time around, absolutely buy a copy. It is fantastic, open ended, and one of the very few games I've played that really makes you feel like a very small part of a massive universe. The game play is as varied as you would like it to be. You can focus on what ever part you enjoy most. You can play as an evil character or a glorious hero. You can focus on amassing wealth, or being an assassin, or being a loner, or virtually anything else you can think of. You can try to change large scale events, or you can live of the periphery minding your own business and achieving your own objectives. What ever your choose, you will never be bored. The pay off of playing this game is huge regardless of what objectives you pursue.

This is an amazing, fantastic, diverse game that is beloved by all who got sucked in the first time around. Weather you're new to the game or upgrading from the older version, the price is well worth admission. This is a game that you can literally get a thousand hours of gameplay out of. It's that good.

6/5 Stars. Get a copy for yourself and all your friends. It's that good.

4.0 out of 5 stars Can't believe I Originally Missed This One!, May 19, 2009
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Space Rangers 2: Reboot (CD-ROM)
For those who can look past some of the rough edges this is actually a real gem of a game... I've never played anything else quite like it. Anyone who wants to have a unique adventure and likes a space setting should definitely check this one out. Other reviews describe the series and game play mechanics well, I just wanted to add that Reboot is a stand alone expansion and basically includes the content from the original Space Rangers 2: The Rise of the Dominators along with some new quests and patched up well (Except for Vista it appears). It wasn't too clear everywhere I looked for information, but I can now confirm that the original is not needed to enjoy the retail DVD release of Reboot. Also, Space Rangers 1 is included as a bonus... A very nice package to jump into the series with and see what all the positive fuss was about. Still kicking myself for not finding out about this title sooner.

5.0 out of 5 stars More Room to Roam in Space Rangers 2 Reboot, April 21, 2009
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Space Rangers 2: Reboot (CD-ROM)
Space Rangers 2: Rise of the Dominators was an action packed adventure game in which you as a Freelancing Space Ranger engaged in Escorting Ships, Killing Pirates and Criminals, being a Pirate and Smuggling as your most frequent adventures. If you wanted to there was also plenty of machine aliens (Dominators) to kill. And Planet side there were also things like Pizza making contests and Rock N Roll Festivals to be involved in.

Space Rangers 2: Reboot adds even more adventure to all of this. Now even shooting a wayward asteroid is fun. If the asteroid is on course to hit a planet you get paid by that planet. If not, the asteroid may be a subject of Science study and a Planet will be mad at you for shooting it.

Another exciting change is now you can Hire Pirates to work with you in a squad. The Pirates aren't eager to shoot at the Dominators but will help you shoot at almost anyone else.

A change that's worth a few laughs is now not only can you change your species you can also change your name and your gender.

The Search system has been greatly improved and it is now much easier to find equipment you are looking for or to find a trade route.

You can now specify what distance from your position (i.e. parsecs) that you are looking for a piece of equipment or a trade route.

I'm currently playing my third game. My first two Rangers got killed. So, I don't know everything yet about Space Rangers 2: Reboot.

The last excellent thing I can think of is that this is a stand alone game and not a Mod. So if you want to Try Space Rangers 2 Rise of the Dominators first, and then try Space Rangers 2 Reboot you can. The Dominators seem to use different tactics in both games. I like both games allot and I find them both fun and creative. So, I think to a new user this last feature may provide great fun.

The only downside I can see to Space Rangers 2 Reboot is that they use the same manual for this game as the original Space Rangers 2 Rise of the Dominators. So there is equipment and ship types in Space Rangers 2 Reboot that you just have to experience yourself, to see if its right for your Ranger.

3.0 out of 5 stars Solid, but unspectacular, March 14, 2011
= Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Space Rangers 2: Reboot (CD-ROM)
If I could give half stars, this would deserve a 3.5. I had very high hopes for this game, it had been recommended several times to me. Overall. Space Rangers 2 tries to accomplish too many different concepts/game mechanics without doing any particularly well. In its defense, it doesn't do any of them particularly poorly, but there just doesn't seem to be a home run to be found anywhere in this game. The basic, fly-your-ship around mechanic works well enough, but it's mainly used for a bunch of delivery quests and the occasional escort mission (though thankfully, the ships you escort are normal, functional spacecraft and not the flying butter sculptures of so many other space game escort missions.... I'm looking at you Wing Commander). The combat is a bland "click to engage" type in which I don't really feel involved. The combat is generally worsened by the constant running-to-a-planet-to-repair activity, which is a great idea, but serves little purpose but to draw things out and drain bank accounts. The ships are customizable... but not customizable enough that the basic combat or gameplay mechanics ever change. The surface warfare RTS is a simple, stripped down affair with a perplexing and difficulty-curve-breaking ability to take direct control of one unit. The commodity-trading mechanic is as dull as every other commodity trading game on the planet. The blackhole combat arcade shooter is a functional rendition of something you can find in a million retro arcades, or current flash games. Nothing's actually bad, just nothing really grabs you.

The game tries to glue it all together with a witty and charming tone set in a vast space opera universe, but if you are going to make something work primarily through wit and charm, you need it in glorious excess (Firefly, Portal, DeathSpank), not dispensed in tepid doses.

Despite all this, there's a bit more to like than to dislike in the game. Each mechanic is done well enough to deserve your attention for a few minutes at least and the strategy gamer in my head is engaged enough to want to try to figure out how to optimize my ship. I've found myself playing hours longer than I had intended to a couple of times, which is really the litmus test for a good game, isn't it? Perhaps the endgame activity will bring out some depth and excitement. As it is, it was a worthy bargain purchase and deserves a look, perhaps this unique blend of concepts will catch you more than it did me.

I was unable to get this game to work at all on my Win7 64bit laptop. It gets to the main game menu and then freezes when you select an option. I've tried all the usual compatibility settings to no avail. Really unhappy that Amazon doesn't allow returns of download products, even if defective!

3.0 out of 5 stars Variety in a BOX called SPACE, December 31, 2010
= Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Space Rangers 2: Reboot (CD-ROM)
Very diverse turn based space strategy game that calls on just about every appreciable aspect of 4X (Explore, Expand, Exploit, Extermination) games. The controls are simpistic and graphics on par with say Star Control 3. However, this is an advantage in this case, as it allows the game to be played on nearly any computer. Play it with vengeance and you will get you hooked. I particularly enjoyed the text quests on a variety of different topics which really add to the spice of the game. This game is not really a "sand box", as there is a definitive ending, but the ride is the what is important. A long single ranger against the odds. It will take a vast amount of time, to really get anything accomplished as you struggle to fight the odds stacked against you. REBOOT is in essence just an expansion of SR2: Rise of the Dominators. If you already own SR2, its not worth the extra money. The game is also DRM free, which is a breath of fresh air. A true sleeper hit.

I LOVE this game!!! I spent many nights up playing this bad boy and still find it entertaining and well thought out. The story is as simple or complex as you like it and there are many different mini games in this that can fulfill your other gaming desires. If I want to do a strategy styled game I can or if I want to play text quests, that is available too! If you buy this you won't be disappointed!

1.0 out of 5 stars This expansion is a patch that you pay for., July 4, 2009

I REALLY like Space Rangers 2. I'm a hard working guy who almost never misses work. I ended up missing two days of work because I stayed up too late playing it. I absolutely adore it.

So you can imagine I was hoping for alot from this expansion. But honestly, even a little would have been fine, it's only [...] dollars.

This expansion gives you a few new equipment items (not many), a few new missions (again, not many), and fixes some bugs.

That's it.

I was hoping it would , I don't know...expand on the universe, or expand on the types of enemies, or ...well, anything. This should have been a free patch, honestly. Most companies release this little amount of content as a free download.

5.0 out of 5 stars Put your shoes and socks on., July 18, 2009
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Space Rangers 2: Reboot (CD-ROM)
Like a dear old friend, Space Rangers 2 drops by unexpectedly, and suggests pursuing some good ol' fashioned fun.

"But, I don't have tons of ram, or the latest video card." You protest with honest concern.

"Wow, who did this to you?" Space Rangers 2 smiles back at you. "Come on, let's go adventuring."

You admire your old friend's wit, and creativity, and before you know it, you're whisked away to places you've never seen, doing things you never thought you'd do, until the Sandman laps at your heels.

Such is the mark of an outstanding gaming experience.

Things are happening whether you're there, or not. Everyone in the game world has a name, and an ajenda. You can even compare your progress with theirs.

It's a 2D / 3D open world RPG / space-exploring / stradegy / classic shooter / text adventure, with a side order of humor. If for some reason, you don't care for certain elements, they can be turned off through the extensive options menu.

Space Rangers 2 is a nod back to when developers could afford to stray from cookie cutter, or console driven, flash before substance, drivel. When game design was refreshing, and original. Reboot simply adds more of almost everything. In a nutshell, it's a reminder of why some of us will always be PC gamers.

Keep the reminders coming.
