Book Description

January 1, 1992
Space Sailing offers a clear, concise and fascinating insight into the concepts behind solar sails, covering all aspects of the technology, from the basic principles of the solar sail to proposed trajectories for trips into various planetary orbits. Large sections of the book are nontechnical, making the reading informative to the layperson as well as those involved in space research. No other form of space transportation has the potential to operate at such low cost, making space sailing an attractive alternative to other forms of space travel. This well-illustrated book includes a description of the range of applications for space sailing ships and analyzes their economic importance.

Editorial Reviews

Review

A century from now when we hope sailing ships are carrying cargos to and from the planets of our solar system, Jerome Wright will be remembered as one of the pioneers of the solar sailing technique...It (the book) is complete but not too technical and thus us available to the interested laymen as well as to the space scientist or engineer..
–Louis Friedman of the Planetary Society

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction to solar sails, November 25, 2000
This review is from: Space Sailing (Paperback)
"Space Sailing" by Wirght is an excellent introduction to the concept of solar sails. The first two chapters introduce the concept of space sailing and provides examples of possible uses. Later chapters go into more details on ship design, sail materials and construction, ship deployment issues, and ship control mechanisms. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in space sails.
