A fresh collection of sci-fi stories with a feminist touch,
By Midwest Book Review (Oregon, WI USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Space Sirens: Full-Throttle Space Tales #2 (Paperback)
The female presence in science fiction is ever growing. "Space Sirens: Full Throttle Space Tales #2" is a compilation of science fiction from both male and female writers, focusing on female characters dealing with traditional and not-so-traditional science fiction plots. Women bring their own unique perspective to the genre of science fiction; anyone who's looking for a fresh collection of sci-fi stories, especially those with a feminist touch, should consider "Space Sirens".

Not one bad story,

Despite what the title seems to indicate, Space Sirens is an excellent collection of stories with women as the heroes. Although there are some of the traditional space princess and ladies of the evenings, the rest are a refreshing look at women's roles in the future of space travel. For instance, one story tells of the arrival of a doctor on a frontier planet, another of space trader making a deal with the natives, while even another covers an odd little adventure with a cop undercover to solve a kidnapping case. These are just a few samplings of this collection and I highly recommend it to both women readers and men. It isn't at all what the title suggests and therefore a wonderful surprise.

Denver Post Review,
By DAVID B. RILEY (Vail, CO USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Space Sirens: Full-Throttle Space Tales #2 (Paperback)
By Fred Cleaver The Denver PostPosted: 05/03/2009 "Space Sirens," edited by Carol Hightshoe, $17.95 The second volume of local publisher Flying Pen Press' Full-Throttle Space Tales has the theme of women in space. Ten of the 19 stories are by Colorado writers. Besides featuring heroines, the most striking feature of this collection is how many stories involve mining either in space or on a planet. My three favorites: "Outpost 6," by Julia Philips about the new doctor on a backwater planet (and a mining accident); "Real Hero," by W. A. Hoffman, about a kidnaped singer and her captor; and "Ruler," by David B. Riley, about a princess appointed a planet's governor |
