Book Description

November 1998
The second edition of Space: A Visual History was entirely redesigned and programmed from the original 1993 version. This new edition is the most complete archive of American space flight available in a CD ROM format. The second edition contains 87 minutes of video in a 320 x 240 pixel format, in 60 different original films. Each film is a new compilation taken from NASA source tapes, edited, and an original narration added. The first edition contained film from Mercury, Gemini, Apollo, and Space Shuttle missions. The new edition contains newly edited films for each of the original mission groups and entirely new video and text for the Skylab, the International Space Station, and Space Shuttle missions through November 1998. In addition, Mercury and Gemini missions film, not found in the original version have been included. Programming changes to the product provide much faster access to the contents of the CD ROM under both Windows 95, Windows 98, and Macintosh operating systems. 100 photographs were scanned from the NASA archives for the product, all of which are easily exported to the readers computer for unlimited reuse. Similarly, all of the video on the product is exportable for unlimited reuse in the home or educational environments. Additional text was added from the "The Space Almanac" written by Anthony Curtis, Ph.D. The author and editors were careful to preserve invaluable archival footage such as Presidential comments on Spaceflight, manned missions to the moon, and day/night footage of the earth from Space.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Overall, this program is excellent in accuracy and presentation and provides a wealth of information. -- National Science Teachers Association, Science Scope, 10/96

Plenty of facts and beautiful film clips. -- Lexington Herald Leader

Space is something between an encclopedia and a history book - call it (as the publisher does) an almanac. ...Space provides an excellent visual introduction to, and overview of the history of the American manned space program. The creators of Space wisely decided to allow the material they used (original NASA video) provide the spice of the program. No fancy animations, no cutesy characters - and it works. This program is appealing to students interested in space, and based on our testing, was also popular with baby-boomer parents and teachers who remembered watching the race to the moon as it happened. Bottom-Line. Space is a wonderful compilation of fascinating films and history... Rated on a scale of 1 to 5, 4.8 for educational value, 4.5 for kids appeal, and 4.8 for ease of use. -- Superkids, November 10, 1998

Space: A Visual History...takes you where few have gone before. Blast off with this multimedia almanac of American space travel. -- Windows Magazine, 6/95

Well designed from the ground Up. -- Electronic Entertainment, 1/94

From the Publisher

This edition of Space is the result of an additional year of research into the NASA film archives beyond our original research and a similar period of internal programming and design work. We have strived to continue our lead over all other CD ROM products introduced since our first edition was released in 1992, especially in terms of the comprehensiveness and design quality of our product. We were careful to weed out all of the information relating to the Space Station as NASA's plans for the station changed, and as it evolved into the International Space Station. We reviewed and cut dozens of the older films so that there is less repetition of launches and landing, less hi-jinks by astronauts eating floating food, and more coverage of science missions and earth photography from space. The volume should be considered the definitive electronic reference to American Spaceflight missions. There is a total of 648 megabytes of information on one CD ROM; we really worked to pack in every bit of information we could to make this product worthwhile.
