The band's potential is first realized here, May 24, 1999
This is the first Galactic Cowboys album I've heard and it's an incredible improvement from their awful debut. First-rate riffs, harmonies, and progressive arrangements highlight this release. The title track starts things off, and it's nothing that great -- just serves as a high energy intro. "You Make Me Smile" is another OK track but still blows away anything from the first album. "I Do What I Do" is when the band first comes into their own. Everything in this song is awesome, especially the incredibly inspiring chorus (love those harmonies here) and the unpredictable solo section. "Circles In The Fields" is a pretty good thrasher, but "If I Were A Killer" has that track beat for sure -- imagine Tool, Faith No More, and Anthrax collaborating on a song, and that's what you get here. "Blind" is dead similar to the Beatles in the harmonies which blights the track a little but overall it's still a great tune. "No Problems", however, is the ultimate highlight where everything comes together -- the chorus, the riffs, the time changes, the harmonies, everything in a definite mix. "About Mrs. Leslie" is an unbelievably great take on British culture with a menacing riff with a Metallica-esque interlude. "Where Are You Now?" crunches nicely with a particularly interesting Monty Colvin phone conversation sample near the end. The two "hidden tracks": "Ranch On Mars" is another highlight done in the trademark Galactic Cowboys style, and "Still Life Of Peace" is probably the most Beatles-y of any of these songs, with the sitar and harmonies, and it's a bit too long, but it's still OK. Overall, this is a great album worth picking up, even for only the best songs I've just mentioned, and they've come into their own here, almost fully realizing their potential. OVERALL RATING: 8/10
