Book Description

Photographs of space have always been fascinating and extraordinary and never more so than now that space telescopes such as Hubble are bringing us strange and beautiful images of unimaginably distant regions of the universe, even almost to the beginning of time. Spacecam celebrates the unique perspective of cameras freed from the confines of the earth; looking back at our own colourful planet and the patterns made by coastlines, river deltas and weather patterns, the activity in our own backyard of satellites and space shuttles, exploring the solar system with stunning pictures of our nearest neighbours, and of course the cosmic ballet of deep space. Utilizing amazing photographs from spaceships and stations, satellites, space telescopes, probes and planetary rovers, Spacecam will bring together the beautiful, the pioneering and the scientifically astounding, looking at our own tiny and fragile world, around us at our neighbours, and out into deep space.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

With captions serving as text, this volume gathers 300 images, generally one per page, acquired from spacecraft from Apollo to the present. Hope notes the spectrum collected by the imaging instrument, be it radio, visible light, or ultraviolet, and then describes the scene. The book includes some of NASA's most famous photographs, but Hope is not stuck in a greatest-hits groove. He pulls pictures containing something intrinsically dramatic, either a wide-frame mosaic of an outer planet (e.g., Saturn) or zoom-magnification of the results of earthly catastrophe, such as the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. Others represent intrinsic scientific interest, such as clues to water collected by NASA's Martian flotilla, or the creation or destruction of stars as captured by the Hubble Space Telescope. Perhaps browsers will linger longest over the images of Earth's environment, and here Hope has chosen well: volcanoes, icebergs, storms, and pollution display the natural and man-made activity impressively or disturbingly visible from space. An economical option for libraries' space-age photography requirement. Gilbert Taylor

5.0 out of 5 stars A visual exploration of Earth and deep space as seen from a variety of mediums, November 7, 2005
This review is from: Spacecam: In Co-Operation With NASA (Hardcover)
Spacecam: Photographing The Final Frontier From Apollo To Hubble provides a visual exploration of Earth and deep space as seen from a variety of mediums: from the eyes of astronauts, satellites, space telescopes, and NASA probes. Lovely color photos on every page pack in what astronauts and probes see in space; from images of Earth to other worlds. There have been many other astronomy photo books published over the years, but most have a more singular focus: Hubble, Earth-from-Moon, etc. Spacecam is the most multi-faceted collection of them all.
