Editorial Reviews

Any Gun Can Play: (Italian: Vado l'ammazzo e torno) is a 1957 spaghetti western starring Gilbert Roland, Ed Byrnes and George Hilton. It follows a familiar pattern of protagonists searching for gold, double-crossing one another and a high body count. The three main characters continually change allegiances and get the upper hand only to be thwarted by fellow outlaws, mysterious insurance investigators and each other. This was Hilton's first big role and he is quite winning as "Stranger" as is veteran Roland as the band Monetero. In the opening scene one of the three outlaws is dressed very similar to Clint Eastwood's character in The Man With No Name. 105min / Color / 2:35:1 / 1967. A Bullet for Sandoval: John Warner (George Hilton) is a rebel soldier who deserts his outfit on the eve of battle and goes over the border into Mexico to be with his girlfriend when she gives birth to their child. When he arrives Warner finds that his fiancée has died in childbirth and her father, played by Ernest Borgnine, lusts only to kill him. Raw, savage Western fare in the tradition of A Fistful Of Dollars, co-directed by Lucio Fulci, one of the masters of blood-soaked Italian horror/fantasies and sexy thrillers. 91min / Color / 2:35:1 / 1970. Bonus Features: Any Gun Can Play: Theatrical Trailer. A Bullet for Sandoval: Theatrical Trailer, Widescreen Anamorphic Transfer Enhanced for 16x9 monitors. Product Specs: 1-DVD9; Dolby Digital Mono; 203 minutes; Color; 2.35:1 Aspect Ratio; Year - 1969 & 1968; SRP - $14.99.

2.0 out of 5 stars Poorly formatted-wrong aspect ratio, August 9, 2011

I can confirm what another reviewer reported. The aspect ratio of both videos is way off, about 2.7:1 instead of the original aspect ratio which should be 2.35. They do appear to be anamorphic since playing them with the DVD player in letterbox mode makes the aspect ratio even worse. Other VCI Spaghetti Western double features I own do not have this issue and are in the correct original aspect ratio when played in the 16:9 enhanced mode.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another VCI Double Pistola Release, April 5, 2011
This review is from: Spaghetti Western Double Feature Vol 2: Bullet for Sandoval / Any Gun (DVD)
VCI continues to re-release there Spaghetti DVD's into double feature packages and if you don't have any of them, you're missing some great entertainment. First up, Director Julio Buchs's 'A BULLET FOR SANDOVAL' aka 'QUEI DISPERATI CHE PUZZANO DI SUDORE E DI MORTE'-1969 which I already had separately purchased. The quality is identical with a nice 1.85 widescreen transfer with good color and sound. Euro star George Hilton and American actor Ernest Borgnine chew up the scenery in this tale of love and revenge over the ultra beautiful Annabella Incontrera. It is also rumored that the film was co-directed by Lucio Fulci and in some scenes the master's stroke is most definitely there. The music by Gianni Ferrio and super photography by Francisco Sempere round out the mix. The next one 'ANY GUN CAN PLAY' aka 'GO KILL AND COME BACK'; 'VADO...L'AMMAZZO E TORNO'-1968 I had never seen and was greatly surprised. Here we have a western which could have ripped off Sergio Leone's 'THE GOOD, THE BAD. AND THE UGLY' but Director Enzo G. Castellari gives the script by Romello Guerrieri and Sauro Scavolini an elegaeic sense of purpose. Here the three gunmen are also brought together by gold hidden in the pipes of an organ within an abandoned church. George Hilton, once again , leads actors Gilbert Roland who made another great Spaghetti, Director Dario Silvestri's 'BETWEEN GOD, THE DEVIL, AND A WINCHESTER' aka 'ANCHE NEL WEST, C'ERA UNA VOLTA DIO'- 1968 and 'ROUTE 66' star Edd Byrnes who also was in a number of Spaghetti's including the great 'PAYMENT IN BLOOD' aka 'SETTE WINCHESTER PER UN MASSACRO'-1968 directed by Castellari's brother Enzo Girolami. The music score is catchy and why not, its helmed by the great Francesco Di Masi. This also has a nice transfer but sometimes has some dark passages in the negative. All in all, a worthy release for Euro western fans and collectors.

1.0 out of 5 stars Improperly letterboxed prints on this double feature disc., June 10, 2011

This review is from: Spaghetti Western Double Feature Vol 2: Bullet for Sandoval / Any Gun (DVD)
VCI's double feature of BULLET FOR SANDOVAL and ANY GUN CAN PLAY Spaghetti Western Double Feature Vol 2: Bullet for Sandoval / Any Gun is in the wrong aspect ratio for both prints. They are stretched too far horizontally, making the image uncommonly narrow. One might be able to adjust this on a monitor that changes the aspect ratio, but on a regular monitor, you are stuck with looking at an image that takes up only about 1/3 of the viewing area. The single-feature VCI DVDs of each title are in the proper aspect ratio, and I recommend seeking those out instead of this disc. A BULLET FOR SANDOVAL is on Amazon A Bullet for Sandoval but I had to seek out ANY GUN CAN PLAY elsewhere.
