Designed to sit in a driveway, backyard, or any other open space, the Spalding 60-inch portable basketball system will turn your paved landscape into a jump-shooting haven. The system starts with a 60-inch acrylic backboard with a heavy-duty steel frame. The board offers the same look and feel as pro-style glass backboards, helping you shoot layups and bank shots with confidence. The Arena Slam breakaway rim, meanwhile, holds up well against the force of emphatic dunks--a must for modern hoops. The rim includes an institutional-style wrap with steel support braces, along with an ultra-smooth spring action that's designed to flex when pressure is applied, helping relieve stress from the backboard during game play. And hops-challenged players will love the hoop's Screw Jack lift system, which lets you adjust the height from 7.5 to 10 feet in infinite increments. When the hoop is at your preferred height, the handle removes to prevent tampering or accidental injuries. Other features include a two-wheel, 40-gallon base that fills with sand or water for maximum stability and safety; a front cover that acts as a built-in rebounder during play; a 16-inch board offset; and a three-piece, 3.5-inch-diameter round pole set at a 20-degree angle from the base.

My biggest fear in buying this hoop for my son was that I'd teach him a few new bad words if he helped me assemble it. I am NOT "handy" and have "learned" over the years that instruction manual authors and illustrators undergo special training so they can convey ambiguous and deceptive directions.

But the assembly was such a pleasant surprise and the end product so awesome, I had to post a review (my first ever, for anything).

The end product is attractive and solid. We live in the Midwest and I was afraid the large backboard would act like a sail on windy days. Being able to lower the backboard when not in use is a big plus and it's very easy to do. We filled the tank with water and, as per the directions, 2 gallons of antifreeze since we live in a cold climate. I believe that will work fine, but the day after final assembly the weather forecast called for 40-50 mph gusts. So being a bit of a ninny, I put an extra 150lbs of ballast (bags of rock salt) on top of the tank. The hoop is solid as a rock both in the wind and during play.

Assembly was pretty painless and took about 5 hours altogether. Contrary to what I've come to expect from instruction manuals, this one was pretty decent. A couple of assembly tips:

1. Tools needed. I can't imagine trying to assemble this without a socket wrench set. Also, most of the time during assembly the pole will rest on sawhorses - make sure they are tall enough before you start (at least 38" high). You'll need that much clearance when the backboard is attached.

2. The instructions advise to check that bolts fit smoothly thru their intended holes in case dried paint around the hole opening impedes that. Good advice. I encountered that issue in step A 11 when attaching the "elevator tubes".

I would recommend this systems to anyone who wants to avoid a cheap basketball system. I bought this goal from Amazon and it was delivered within a few days. I read the instructions, so I thought thoroughly but missed focusing on the bouncing of the pole part. Please know it is not necessary to bounce the pole for as long as I did. The instructions say subtely, that when the poles stop moving you can stop. They should be about 1.5 inches from the sticker that tells which pole is which (i.e., bottom, top, etc.). I figuered that out and moved through the directions. Everything went as designed. Be advised again, this sytem is heavy which is great because you know you have a quality system. The instructions will tell you there will be parts left over because the bolts, screws etc., that come with it fit several systems. I think I used just about everything. The directions also talk about using a saw horse to assist with the assembly. I have standard size saw horses and they were not quite high enough to support all of the assembly. So anticipate that. Rested mine on our plastic X-mas storage boxes to install the the backboard by myself. Once the back board is on, this thing gets real heavy fast. Make sure you have someone to help you get it back upright and note that the base bacuse it is empty will roll. I almost coudn't get it back up by myself and I consider myself pretty strong. Now the really great parts. The 60 inch back board is great. Even though its acrylic, the bounce in the center is perfect. The sides seem to give a good bounce as well. It is solid and does not reverberate like some of the cheaper systems. The base is huge, holds 40 gallons and the entire system will weigh about 450 lbs when done. Haven't moved it around yet.Read more ›

There are lots of comments here on assembly, so I'll start there.

Instructions
I found the instructions to be on par with virtually everything else in the "assembly required" category ... swing sets, ping pong tables, modular furniture, etc. It's no better and no worse that those items. You won't get the Apple experience here, but the instructions are very usable.

There are a couple of items that are out of sequence. For example, after step 9 is a note to tighten the bolts you installed in steps 4 thru 8. But, I never saw anything in steps 4 thru 8 that suggested I not tighten them. (My step references may be off, but the point is the same -- maybe front-load the direction to not tighten bolts until later).

Otherwise, thorough and relatively easy to follow.

Physical Assembly
These systems have a 3-piece pole. The instructions tell you to "bounce" the pieces together. It's a full-body slam. After wrestling with the first pole, I used some grease on the second one. I recommend grease.

You need some sort of saw-horse. This is called out in the instructions. I used two ladders with 2x4s between them. A standard saw-horse may not work, as you need it to be fairly tall. Just know this going in -- you have to have some way to have the pole horizontal and off the ground.

Hardware fit was snug and secure. Occasionally, the powder coating impeded bolts from fitting and required light tapping with a rubber mallet. This is called out in the instructions, though.

I think it would be nearly impossible to install the backboard without a 2nd person. It took me and my dad 3 hours to assemble, including a good 30 minutes to diagnose a missed bolt. Oops ...
