Book Description

June 19, 2012 Spandex
Prowler, Liberty, Neon, Indigo, Butch, Mr Muscles, Diva -- all superpowered, all British, and the first all gay super-hero team there ever was!

Created by independent comics artist Martin Eden, Spandex charts the highs and lows of a group of superheroes, doing battle with 50 feet lesbians, a group of skilled pink ninjas, as well as their own insatiable urges! Packed with pop culture references, nods to classic comics and chock-full of humour, Spandex is a super-hero book like no other!

Editorial Reviews

Review

"A thoroughly entertaining and enjoyable read, Spandex is a comic which deserves to reach a wide audience. Whether you're gay or straight is completely irrelevant - it's just a damn good book." – Comic Book Movie

"What worked for the writing and worked better than nearly every other new franchise team book I’ve ever read, was the fact that there was a history for these characters and a world that felt real." – Comic Bastards

"Martin Eden is a man who was tired of waiting around for mainstream comics do the right thing with their LGBT superheroes, so he went ahead and did it himself. The result is fresh and fun and gayer than every Bravo reality show rolled up in a rainbow and smashed inside an episode of Glee." – After Ellen

"Thank you Martin Eden! This Brit gets it. Not only does he give us a team of seven LGBT superheroes, he makes them sexy, smart, and most of all sassy and funny to boot." – Lambda Literary review

"
admirably idiosyncratic... excellent stuff" – SciFiNow

4.0 out of 5 stars More! Deeper! July 30, 2012
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
The problem here is that three issues was too soon for a collection. There is a lot of good stuff, but lots (and lots) of hints get dropped and nothing gets a payoff. Everyone has a secret - is it too much to ask that there be one actual hero type in a gay supergroup?

I'm kind of on the fence about the art. It's cutesy and faux naive, but there are some really nice compositions. I wish I could enjoy it without the winking and the ghostly voice whispering, "It's meta. Meeeeetaaaaa..." in my ear the whole time.

The best thing, though, is that Eden clearly loves his characters. He knows all about them, and he wants to share them with you. I hope he gets the chance, and we see many more of these books.
