5.0 out of 5 stars a unique view of a great group, February 9, 2010
This review is from: The Spaniels Acapella Collection (Audio CD)
If you're reading this review you're probably already aware that the Spaniels were one of the greatest R & B vocal groups of their era. To label them as "doo Wop" is to trivialize their truly great music and depth of catalog. That said, you probably also know that the Spaniels did not record an acapella album. This CD is the handy work of Wayne Stierle, and it's clear that he had a genuine appreciation and respect for the Spaniels. The essence of any vocal group is simply the vocals. How do they sound by themselves? Through digital remastering Wayne gives us an idea of what the Spaniels were really about. The group mixes are fantastic. However, I guess he couldn't resist "screwing around" with some of the songs such that the overall impact of the CD is diminished. Things like double bass mixes, etc. are best left to disco ducks. Even with this caveat, this CD will prove enjoyable and enlightening for Spaniels and acapella music lovers. It does not replace or improve on any of the original Spaniels recordings, but rather makes a unique addition to their catalog.
