3.0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected
This book was not what I expected. It does help people to learn more vocabulary, but I already knew what it presents. I thought it was presenting more complex ideas and vocabulary. However, there are very good associations to help learn more Spanish vocabulary. I would not recommend for someone who has more extensive knowledge of Spanish.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, different approach in a Spanish Textbook, January 31, 2006

This review is from: Spanish by Association (Paperback)
Wow! After teaching my own Spanish classes and in the public schools for as long as I have, I thought I'd seen all TYPES of books. When I got frustrated with the texts out there, I even wrote my own! But this is an approach I hadn't seen in a book.

I often use word pictures to help my students with memorization. Of course, it should work in a book format! I found myself giggling upon opening the text and reading about the camel in the cama (bed) and a car horn when we open a cajo'n (drawer).

I'll be recommending this book to any adult or child who wants a fun way to memorize new words. With practice, you won't need the book - it teaches you how to teach yourself Spanish! Marvelous!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Book, December 28, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Spanish by Association (Paperback)
I learned more from reading this book than I learned in all my years of school system Spanish combined. My confidence was so shattered by the poor teaching methods used in the classroom that it took me many years to recover my original interest and begin studying Spanish as an Adult. I really thought I was beyond hope and just couldn't learn a foreign language. I was wrong. This book gave me the tools and confidence necessary to continue studying Spanish and even enjoy doing so. It is a book for beginners but once you learn the technique you can make up your own link words and continue improving your vocabulary on your own. Highly Recommended

5.0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Book! I Love It, March 21, 2002
This review is from: Spanish by Association (Paperback)
I'm really excited and impressed with this book because of the memory link method that's used. I was suprised at how fast I could memorize spanish words and construct together spanish phrases and expressions. One of the books pluses is that it doubles as a workbook, where you can write in the answers. Using this method made it easy for me to retain the information learned. This book is also a lot of fun. I was enjoying myself so much that I had completed three chapters without even realizing that I had went that far in the book. The illustrations are way too cute. Even an adult such as myself can appreciate them. They give the book more of a fairytale theme, which is less intimidating to some, when learning a new language. Overall, I think that beginners and intermediate speakers would appreciate this book. Advanced spanish speakers might find this book a bit elementary but it's still a wonderful book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Yo puedo hablar espanol muy bien!, February 26, 2002

Foreign language can often seem like Greek because it just might be. Today's American society may look to learning another language as irrelevant to every day life. However, bilingual is the way to go if you want to flourish on the international scene, and Spanish is the most widely spoken language in the world. Am I telling you that you have to speak spanish? Not necessarily, but it wouldn't be a bad place to begin expanding your horizons.

Dr. Michael M. Grunberg has developed a Linkword Language System that provides easy to remember word pictures to help you recall words in Spanish. This system is especially great for recalling vocabulary. As a Spanish student of three years, I can testify that learning the language consists of vocabulary and verb conjugation. With this easy to use technique of memorization half of the work invovled in learning a foreign language is eliminated, or at least simplified.

Not only is this book great for Spanish students. It provides a quick and easy base of knowledge for those who may be travelling to Spanish speaking countries. Do you work for an international company? Do you have a lunch meeting with spanish speaking customers? No problem. In twelve hours or less you can memorize enough spanish lingo to hold your own during a conversation.

Go ahead. Read the book. You can impress those around you and impress yourself because you can speak Spanish. This self-help book really does live up to its expectations. If you want maximum results in minimum time, this is the book for you. Personally I found the book not only helpful, but humerous and interesting too. I must say its a great purchase for spanish teachers, spanish students, vacationers, business persons, and just the average joe--or jane--out for a great read.

I am delighted with this book, I call it my secret weapon. My vocabulary has already increased hugely. Not having a great memory, I was anxious to try new ways of learning - and this is it. Visualisation is definitely a fast track key. The words are simple to remember and learning is therefore rapido! In addition, the clear explanations on grammar make this book an enjoyable and swift read. I'd like to see a Stage II published.

4.0 out of 5 stars It does a good job for the limited role it plays, February 17, 2008
This review is from: Spanish by Association (Paperback)
Let's say there were a point system for learning Spanish: you get 0 points for knowing no Spanish at all, and 100 points for being completely fluent. Knowing this book will keep you at a solid 10 points. You will not forget any of the Spanish you've learned, thanks to the mnemonics in the book -- so you will maintain your score of 10 points -- but you will not earn any more than 10 points, because there is so little Spanish in this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent learning tool for beginners, August 27, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Spanish by Association (Paperback)
I was very impressed with the ease of learning Spanish with this book. I found the associations to be rather unusual in some instances, but their humor added to the ability to remember.

The explanation of the use of "es" and "esta" made more sense to me than the one given to my class by my Spanish teacher. It is also easier to remember which one is to be used in which instance by using Dr. Gruneberg's notes.

The divisions of the book are are also well done. In my opinion, it would be very easy to "learn" Spanish quickly before an expected trip with this book. It is one of the few self help books that really lived up the the "dust cover" advertising.

5.0 out of 5 stars Really great way to learn 100s of Spanish words quickly!, August 10, 2007
This review is from: Spanish by Association (Paperback)
I absolutely LOVE this book! I have not seen any other way to quickly (within a few hours) start using real spanish sentences! I haven't been able to read through this book continuously as it suggests, but even spending 15-30 minutes per day has really helped me!

I really like the method of associating a Spanish word with an English word to be able to remember it. And I like how it builds on previous chapters, so you are challenged to remember the vocabulary and then provided the answer, in case you'd forgotten.

I would definitely recommend this book!
