Book Description

Men-at-Arms July 27, 1977
By the spring of 1936 an armed clash was imminent between the forces of Spain's extreme Left and extreme Right. Viewed largely as a confrontation between democracy and fascism, the resulting civil war proved to be of enormous international significance. Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy intervened to assist General Franco, while the Soviet Union came to the aid of the Republican forces. This book explains the background to the war and charts the course of the nearly three-year long conflict through to General Franco's victory. Photographs and colour plates illustrate the uniforms and equipment of the Republican and Nationalist armies.

Really first rate drawings of the SCW. I am a Falange reenactor, and this book is really helpful at visuallizing what the uniforms looked like. Could it have been better yes. every books needs more. but all in all a good guide to help. I really liked the drawing of the Falange shock trooper.

if you are looking for a Spanish civil war book that explains history look to a bigger book, as you will not know anything on any SCW book by page three

3.0 out of 5 stars Great drawings, but...., December 29, 2010

This review is from: The Spanish Civil War 1936-39 (Men-at-Arms) (Paperback)
This book is a great aid for me as a collector. The drawings and text about uniform details are great.

Also the text is interesting, but it is important to have a bit of knowledge on the subject and read it with a critical eye.

Already on page 3 appears a piece of obviously false information, probably based on the propaganda of the time, but absurd to any who has any knowledge of the political groups involved. In short it is stated that the anarchists, who actually hate government and representation of any kind, supported Caballero in an attempt to impose a Stalin-type Communist government. This is presented as truth, no questions are asked, no uncertainties discussed.

So, though the book is useful it should be read with a critical eye.

3.0 out of 5 stars Average-quality reference, October 20, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Spanish Civil War 1936-39 (Men-at-Arms) (Paperback)
I bought this edition for the subject material. The Spanish Civil War is generally not as well-known as the World Wars, and I was interested in a bit of background information. This series of books is brief, but usually provides an adequate summary of the campaigns, leaders and forces involved. The color illustrations are often the highlight of the books, as they show detail in uniforms and insignia, etc. I've come to the realization that the Osprey series seem a bit overpriced in terms of information, they often cost up to $20 a piece, and I have several now. They could easily be appropriate for middle-school libraries in terms of reading level.
