The Fureys, and especially Finbar, started out in the very traditional traveling-piper genre. But it's tough to make a living playing real Irish trad, so at some point they got into the Irish-ballads-with-whistle scene, and did very well for themselves. This album is a mish-mosh from both those periods. Ten of the 24 tracks are from a vinyl LP by Finbar and Eddie called "Hornpipes Airs & Reels". These are pure-drop dance tunes on pipes or whistle, with excellent guitar accompaniment. I don't know where the rest of the album comes from, cuz I'm a trad guy. But if you like the Clancy Brothers/Irish Rovers kind of folk music (and who doesn't?) you will love the other 14 tracks. At this price, you should have this album in your collection, even if you only like one or the other type of music. The tunes have a uniquely musical style, and the playing borders on virtuosic. The songs aren't your typical St Pat's favorites, but they're damned catchy.

I always love the Fureys and this collection is great. But if you, like me, have a collection of their music, this CD contains much that I already have.
