4.0 out of 5 stars As close as RDI's ever gotten to an "anti-heroine"
People who've read three or more installments from Red Dress Ink know that the heroines in said novels are twenty or thirty-something-year-old career women looking for love over cocktails at trendy bars. However, Spanish Disco, RDI's newest chick lit, has a rather unique protagonist -- well, unique for RDI's standards.

3.0 out of 5 stars Funny heroine; endearing story
Cassie is a book editor for a small publishing company located in Florida. A self professed booze hound who is unsuccessful at relationships, she regularly engages in phone sex with one client who lives abroad in London, and finds herself holed up in reclusive author Roland's island hideaway while he works on a follow up novel to his award-winning debut 30 years prior...

4.0 out of 5 stars As close as RDI's ever gotten to an "anti-heroine", January 12, 2003
This review is from: Spanish Disco (Red Dress Ink (Numbered Paperback)) (Paperback)

Thirty-three-year-old Cassie Hayes is a successful book editor whose life couldn't be messier if she'd tried. After all, she lives on her own, has no fellow-drinking gal pals to mess about with, and, despite the fact that a mysterious English writer is besotted with her, she has no interest in pursuing a relationship with anyone. But when an eccentric Pulitzer Prize-winning author gives her an offer she can't refuse, her life begins to take some unexpected turns...

Erica Orloff does an excellent job in bringing Cassie to life. I was able to relate to Cassie's gripping and realistic situations. Cassie is as close as RDI's ever gotten to an "anti-heroine," for the protagonist's complex personality has a slightly darker edge.

I am duly impressed with the novels that Red Dress Ink has released in the last few months. There's no doubt that this publishing house is venturing into some more literary work. I recommend this fine little gem. RDI enthusiasts won't be disappointed with this one...

4.0 out of 5 stars enjoyable contemporary romance, January 18, 2003
This review is from: Spanish Disco (Red Dress Ink (Numbered Paperback)) (Paperback)
Though West Side Publishing book editor Cassie Hayes now lives in Boca Raton, Florida, she has never shredded her New York City lifestyle, which means coffee at any hour. In the case of her top novelist, Michael Pearton that could mean three in the morning her time as he calls her from England whenever he suffers writer's block or needs phone sex. Cassie likes this relationship because she fears an in the flesh coupling.

Pulitzer Prize winning recluse Roland Riggs agrees to allow West Side to publish his first work since he won the Pulitzer for Simple Simon decades ago. His condition is that the editor resides in his remote home to teach him how to disco dance and court a woman because he is in love for the first since his wife was murdered. Cassie has the assignment that makes her stomach grind not so much because of the spicy food served or that she will be hustling her butt off, but because relationships are not her thing. Yet when Michael becomes extremely jealous, as he loves his Floridian based editor, she begins to reconsider what life is all about encouraged by Roland's struggle to regain his.

SPANISH DISCO is an enjoyable contemporary romance that plays out on several levels as the cast consists of walking wounded souls. Though the tale evolves around gun shy Cassie, readers also obtain a reasonably deep look inside the souls of Roland, Maria (housekeeper and the love of his life), and Michael. Fans of dramas with a dysfunctional relationship theme as its core will want to disco with Erica Orloff's romantic romp.

This book is my favorite Chick Lit book ever because it was different. It was super funny, very witty, and I couldn't put it down until the last page and the surprise ending, which I did not guess. This is the best book Red Dress has ever done!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars What Red Dress Ink Should Be..., April 24, 2003
This review is from: Spanish Disco (Red Dress Ink (Numbered Paperback)) (Paperback)
Spanish Disco is the Red Dress Ink book that I've been waiting for! This book contains all of the elements that an uber-chick novel needs to be a true power read: an angst-ridden singleton, an understanding boss, a wise old mentor, a power job, a love triangle, trans-atlantic cyber affair, and an island paradise setting. Don't let the kitschy cover fool you...Spanish Disco is a for real read.

So, if you've been reading and enjoying the Red Dress Ink series, but feel like some of the plots and characters fall a bit short, then this book will quench your thirst for a fun, yet brilliant chick novel.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sandra Bullock, read this, March 25, 2003
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Spanish Disco (Red Dress Ink (Numbered Paperback)) (Paperback)
OK, so maybe after making 28 Days, which plays fairly continuously in most rehabilitation centers, Sandra Bullock wouldn't want to play the hard-drinking heroine of this book. But it will definitely be a movie one of these days. Witty, sophisticated, a marvelous surprise for one who hasn't read a romance since since her Victoria Holt days in highschool. A character real enough to make me wonder what Cassie is up to right now in. . .but I won't spoil the surprise. This one is ripe for a sequel.

This review is from: Spanish Disco (Red Dress Ink (Numbered Paperback)) (Paperback)
A page-turner with a heroine who is proud to be smart and tough, this book is a winner. It's so refreshing to read chick-lit with a heroine who isn't trying to hide her brains in order to get the guy of her dreams. I loved this book and can't wait to read Orloff's next one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Quirky, Atypical, Glorious., January 5, 2003

This review is from: Spanish Disco (Red Dress Ink (Numbered Paperback)) (Paperback)
I finished reading this book the day I bought it.. it was my splurge purchase at ....

Several things I liked about it -

1) Original Plot. Original Relationships. There are so many books out there that are cookie cutter in design - career woman is out for love.. finds it with some trouble in between.. finds peace within herself blah blah blah. Wake up. That's not necessarily real life. No one is guaranteed a happy, functional ending. Sometimes you have to find happiness in what you get - regardless of its idealism. This book does that.

2) Wit. Bless Wit. So many books are witty & this is one of them.

3) Acceptance of imperfections. This woman didn't feel the need to change for anyone.. she was very aware of her flaws but she never promised to change for anyone - and she was accepted, and loved, for it.

I hope this author writes more in the future. Life isn't a direct route from point A to point B with a few climatic adventures in between resulting in paradise C.. she understands that.

4.0 out of 5 stars One Tequila, Two Tequila, Three Tequila, Four, March 8, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Spanish Disco (Red Dress Ink (Numbered Paperback)) (Paperback)
I agree with the majority of the reviews. This is an enjoyable edition to the Red Dress Ink family. Many of the RDI novels focus on fairly immature ( in my opinion) twenty-somethings. Even though they can be cute reads I was happy to read one where the heroine was over 30 and had more mature issues to deal with.

This was an easy, fun, read that had some wit and humor and some understated 'real" moments. Its perfect for a light Saturday afternoon read.

4.0 out of 5 stars If you love tequila...., February 1, 2003
This review is from: Spanish Disco (Red Dress Ink (Numbered Paperback)) (Paperback)
you'll get a kick out this book!

Cassie is a tequila loving, successful book editor who has been "involved" with a London writer named Michael whom she has never met in person, but has shared hours & hours of steamy phone sex. He is dying to meet her IRL, but Cassie has had much heartache in her life including a failed marriage, a father with Alzheimer's and a mother who abandoned her when she was little.

Cassie must travel to Miami to persuade a once famous writer, Roland to write a sequel. While a guest in his home, she consumes way too many Tums which is due to the hot & spicy menu every morning, noon & night. Cassie learns that Roland has many ghosts in his closet which is preventing him from writing another great story, but she will try ANYTHING to help him with his writers block.

This is a fun story about forgiving the past, getting on with your life and finding closure. Very funny & cute!

Will he write another book?
Does she ever get to meet Michael?
What does Tequila and the Bee Gee's have in common?

You'll just have to read it and find out.....:0)
