This review is from: Spanish Pocket Dictionary: Spanish-English/Ingles-Espanol (Berlitz Pocket Dictionary) (English and Spanish Edition) (Paperback)
When it comes to foreign language learning materials, Berlitz got there first. The company's decades of experience show in this sturdy, pocket-sized (and that's important!) Spanish-English/English-Spanish dictionary. Though small, it far exceeds "word list"-type dictionaries you find travel guides and the backs of textbooks, expanding a main entry to show a few common idioms and usages (e.g "help" includes "help yourself" and "can't help it"). Berlitz uses italicized abbreviations to describe each word or usage, and (unlike a much larger Larousse dictionary I looked at) gives the gender for every noun. Entries are surprisingly up-to-date (e.g. "cell phone"); and purely Latin American usages are so marked. On the minus side, a few common words I wanted (such as "sword") were inexplicably omitted; there are no verb conjugation tables; and there are pronunciation tips for Spanish-speakers but none for us Anglos. This is certainly an excellent tool for travelers or casual users, but serious students should try a more extensive dictionary.
