For anyone like me who can't get enough of these characters of Tracy/Teresa Grant's, starting with her first book Secrets of a Lady, this is a treat. We get a look at how Malcolm and Suzanne become engaged and the first days of their marriage. Faithful readers more or less know already but this gives us more details of the days leading up to the wedding and a few days after and a bit more insight into how and why they got together. Not only that, but there's a little mystery to solve and it's their very first collaboration. It's fun to see Malcolm's surprise at his new wife's sleuthing abilities, since, of course, here and in most of the books he has been in the dark about who she really is.

Tracy Grant keeps her readers on their toes by not releasing this couple's stories in chronological order, but her next, The Paris Affair (Malcom & Suzanne Rannoch Historical Mysteries) (Charles & Melanie Fraser), does follow Imperial Scandal (Malcom & Suzanne Rannoch Historical Mysteries) chronologically, and that one, in turn, followed Vienna Waltz (Malcom & Suzanne Rannoch Historical Mysteries) in real time. For the most part, it has been the stories she wrote as Tracy Grant, rather than Teresa, with Charles and Melanie as the couple's names, that had us moving back and forth in time.

I gave this 5 stars because it filled in some gaps for me in the couple's relationship but I can see that for someone new to the couple and just picking up this novella, it would be perhaps a 3-star story.

4.0 out of 5 stars Too short, but sweet! December 28, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
This novella (available in e-book format only) describes the engagement and wedding of Suzanne and Malcolm Rannoch, the characters from Grant's novels Vienna Waltz and Imperial Scandal. It serves as a prequel to those novels, and fills in some gaps in her readers' knowledge of Suzanne's backstory.

I absolutely love Grant's writing. She does an excellent job of writing mysteries, and although the novella format doesn't give her the usual amount of time to flesh out a story, she still manages to create a good puzzle. Before the wedding, Malcolm is assigned to recover a lover's note which could, in the wrong hands, create a diplomatically disastrous situation between the British and the Spanish. Once he and Suzanne are engaged, he agrees to let her help him track down the letter. Readers of Grant's other novels will recognize how fitting it is for Suzanne and Malcolm to begin their marriage more like working partners than lovers. Grant's writing is full of surprises, too - every time I think I understand a character, she peels back another layer and shows me something I wasn't expecting. It's nice to read something that has the comfort of characters you know and can still keep you on your toes.

One of the best things about purchasing this novella was getting a sneak peak at the first chapter of The Paris Affair (expected publication date 3/26/13). I would have bought the book anyway, based on how much I have enjoyed her others, but now I cannot wait to read it!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great prequel for lovers of this series December 20, 2012

If you are hooked on the Malcolm/Suzanne (aka Charles and Melanie) books, about a couple who are spies during the Napoleonic Wars, then this is a must read. It's sweet and romantic with a little mystery thrown in.

This really helped understand how the series began. The tension created by marrying her mark is complicated when Suzanne truly falls for Malcolm.

This book really sets the foundation for the series. Although the events are referred to in other books, this helped to make everything clear.
