Review

All his life Michel Gericault has heard the stories of the wealthy Sparhawk family. His mother has made him hate the Sparhawks-- especially Gabriel Sparhawk, the man who killed his father, leaving his mother unmarried and pregnant. Michel's mother makes him promise to avenge his father's death by bringing Gabriel's favorite daughter to Martinique so that the Sparhawks will search for her. Once Gabriel is on Martinique, Michel will kill him and Michel's mother will have what she has wanted for so many years. Kidnapped on her wedding day, Jerusa Sparhawk is forced to leave her home in Newport and travel through the countryside with a man who won't even tell her why he has taken her from her family. She knows he is French and that he's taking her south, but nothing else. Michel treats her kindly, despite the circumstances that have brought them together. As the days go by and she is taken further and further from her home, Jerusa wonders if she could be falling in love with her kidnapper. Michel his torn between his loyalty for his mother and the feelings that he has for Jerusa. More than once he saves her life, and she also saves his. He knows she is his prisoner, but he feels protective of her-- and jealous when another man looks at her. He never expected a woman to love him for himself-- and he never thought he would feel the same way. He loves Jerusa-- and she loves him. But when she finds out that he intends to kill her father, he knows that her love for him will die. Jerusa realizes that by loving Michel, she may lose him or her father. She only wants to put the past to rest, but Michel cannot forget the years of poverty and humiliation that have led to his mother's madness and his promise to her. Yet, he wonders if revenge is worth the price of happiness. Love may not be enough to bridge the gap that separates Jerusa and Michel, but it's all they have. Miranda Jarrett captivates and delights her readers once again! A memorable love story! Pulse-quickening love scenes and characters that steal your heart! This review is from: Sparhawk Bride (Harlequin Historical) (Paperback)
From the back cover:

Love, honor and revenge

Michel Gericault had spent his life searching for the chance to restore honor to his father's memory. But nothing could have prepared him for what the Fates decreed--that his stolen bride, Jerusa Sparhawk, would become the thief of his heart...!

Though Jerusa Sparhawk fair dazzled as a rose-crowned bride, her girlish dreams of marriage were not to be. A soul-transmorming passion in the person of Michel Gericault had swept her away from the bridal bower, near drowning her in his legacy of danger...and desire!

And my review:

This is a popular and often used theme: the captive lady falls in love with her captor. That's not to say that it can't be done well, or in a new way.

This book started off well. I loved the clashed between the hero and the heroine. She was feisty, and he had more to him that his surface would show.

And while this author refrained from the horrible plot device of having the captor rape the captive (and of course she loves it - barf), she did throw them into bed together almost right away, and while the heroine was still engaged to marry another. Disgusting.

I stopped reading after this point. Don't bother spending your money on this book.
