5.0 out of 5 stars Louise Bagshawe does not disappoint
Having read all of Ms. Bagshawe's books, I see her as becoming the next Jackie Collins for her intricate and original tales. Her latest, Sparkles, was just as enjoyable as her first. I could not put it down and read it in about 3 hours. A true must read for saga literature with lots of twists and turns.

3.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating despite some predictability
I love jewelry, love reading about jewelry, and Chez Massot is *the* go-to place for exquisite, one-off jewelry creations that leave places like Tiffany's in the dust. This is a very rich, densely plotted book, although the some of the characters are a bit like caricatures - the good are very good, the bad have no redeeming qualities, and one is a sociopath. 5.0 out of 5 stars Couldn't Put it Down, August 30, 2009

This review is from: Sparkles (Mass Market Paperback)
I picked this book up for 1 dollar at a Garage Sale and thought I would see if it was any good. I could not put it down. I was kept guessing until almost the end and that rarely happens with any book. It was so good I made my husband read it and he liked it too! Well worth it. I wish her books were easier to get in the states!

4.0 out of 5 stars A definate page turner!!!!!, June 4, 2007

This review is from: Sparkles (Mass Market Paperback)
I actually looked forward to getting supper cleaned up, putting my pj's on and curling up on the sofa with this great read!!! I would have given it 5 stars had it not been for the repeated 'F' word used waaaaaayy too much! I know it was used for character development to make Peter Stockton look like the total pig of a slime ball that he was, but geez...come on. It was total overkill!! It was actually starting to hurt my eyes!!! Other than that it was very well written and enjoyable.

Having stumbled upon this book on this website, I took a chance on what seemed like an OK beach read. Was I wrong! You're rooting for Mme Massot while also wondering what will happen next. There is a plot line in the book that seems to not belong, but don't worry, it all makes sense in the end.

Having read this book and Glamour, I wish more of Ms. Bagshawe's books were available on the Kindle.

3.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating despite some predictability, March 14, 2011
This review is from: Sparkles (Paperback)
I love jewelry, love reading about jewelry, and Chez Massot is *the* go-to place for exquisite, one-off jewelry creations that leave places like Tiffany's in the dust. This is a very rich, densely plotted book, although the some of the characters are a bit like caricatures - the good are very good, the bad have no redeeming qualities, and one is a sociopath. I found the character of Tom Massot very annoying, but Hugh was terrific and Sophie finally shaped up into an interesting woman. The biggest weaknesses were a too-pat ending plus a third storyline that starts to weave through rather late in the day, and it was more distracting than interesting. Also some of the solutions to various mysteries were, I thought, pretty obvious.

Storyline: Pierre Massot, head of the fabulous Chez Massot, which he built into quite an empire, goes missing, leaving behind his wife, the gentle and dull Sophie, his teenage son Tom, and a cast of phenomenally unworthy business associates. After Pierre has been gone for seven years, his widow declares him dead, turns the now-ailing stores around, makes a lot of headlines, and attracts the attention of gorgeous, wealthy jewel magnate Hugh. There are a lot of corporate shenanigans, threats of takeovers, romantic liaisons, and misbehavior at all levels that kept me turning the pages. The author obviously has a fabulous imagination - all the international intrigue is quite fun - but there are some plausibility issues. Would make great reading over a long weekend or on a long flight. Not my favorite book by this author, but I will definitely keep reading her.

4.0 out of 5 stars Wow..an unexpected pleasure, August 31, 2009
By
This review is from: Sparkles (Mass Market Paperback)
I'm generally not taken to writing reviews. I read books recommended by others generally who like the same kinds of books I like. I was on vacation last week with my sister who was reading this book. I finished the 2 books I brought and my sister finished this and recommended it to me. I have to tell you I'm pretty picky about books I don't like the syruppy, predictable, overly sexual graphic novels so I have to say I wasn't sure about this book but I NEED to read. OH MY GOODNESS!!!! I was hooked within the first 3 chapters. The depth of the character, the twists and turns. The unusual relationship with Katherine and Pierre which I thought was wonky from the get-go.

I read it almost the whole 5 hr flight home and finished it in 3 short days. I was captivated, I found I was hoping to see changes in the characters which in some I saw and others got their just desserts. I agree with the reviewer who commented about the using of certain "colorful adjective" as this is not a novel for young kids. There was a crudeness to the Stockton character that I was also not fond of but that's a personal preference. One thing that I really like was the lessons on letting go and forgiveness. I'm a firm believer in you reap what you sow and that's exactly what happened in this book.

I would have given it all stars but again..I don't like foul language and I find the "f" word really really offensive.

I'm writing a review of this for my co-workers!!!!

3.0 out of 5 stars This was a good read., December 1, 2008

I do agree that this is a good read. I also agree that the F** word was used too much. I enjoyed the suspense, but I must warn you that it gets a little gory (and it was a little scary). Overall though, very enjoyable.
