Book Description

I am writing this book to share ideas with people who are suffering with the voice disorder of spastic or spasmodic dysphonia(SD). This book will hopefully share vital techniques that I had used to help me regain the use of my speaking voice. I had been to many doctors and have spent countless hours of research year after year trying to find a cure, to no avail. It had been a very frustrating quest, but I am very pleased to announce that there is definitely hope for anyone suffering with SD with the proven techniques of direct voice rehabilitation.

About the Author

I am an insurance agent by profession and had lost the most vital tool in the success of my business, my voice. I had been to some of the best doctors and professionals in the business over a five year period with no hope or cure for my troubled voice. Finally, I found a doctor who specializes in direct voice rehabilitation that has given me back my ability to speak. It has been my experience that most people with this strangled voice disorder have gone through the same battle trying to find relief. I felt the need to share my story with the world to help those in their road to recovery.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Informative and Helpful, August 4, 2001

Although I probably do not have spasmodic dysphonia as described in the book, I do have a problem speaking at times. I have found by reading this book that some possible causes are breathing related. This book gave me some helpful breathing exercises along with some voice exercises. Both have helped immensely.

I was diagnosed with SD and have found this book the most useful and descriptive. I have read anything and everything on the subject and have been implementing the exercises for months with the help of a local SLP. I am happy to say that I also have my normal voice back as well. DVR is not a quick fix by any means. I practiced between 3-4 hours a day consistently for over 6 months, but it is possible and very much worth it. You may not fully understand the techniques until you do it yourself repeatedly and it will eventually click. If you are willing to give it 100%, DVR is the way to go. I highly recommend this book. I also e-mailed the author a couple times for feedback (he was nice enough to include his e-mail address in his book) and he pleasantly responded to any question I had which was also very much appreciated:)

5.0 out of 5 stars SD is not Nuerological, March 16, 2005
This review is from: Spasmodic Dysphonia : The Unspoken Voice Disorder (Paperback)
I also went to see Dr. Morton Cooper for 1 month of DVR (Direct Voice Rehabilitation), and I am pleased to say thanks to him I have my voice! I still struggle with the voice image on occassion, but if I do what I was taught in his office it is a normal voice. Tom Johnson mirrored my experience so much, I thought I wrote the book. If you have SD you need to read this book. Please do not believe what the Dr.'s are telling you about SD. Go to Dr Coopers' web site and read the testimonials. Thanks Tom for explaining your experience in such detail and for letting SD's know that DVR works!
