Awesome, September 18, 2009
This review is from: Spawn Origins Volume 1 (Paperback)
This release shows comic book fans why Spawn has stayed a part of the comic book industry since his introduction in 1992. Great artwork to go along with a great story makes Spawn one of the best comic characters ever created. If you are a Spawn fan or are new to the character I highly recomend this release.

Cheap nostalgia., December 23, 2011
This review is from: Spawn Origins Volume 1 (Paperback)
I mean the title of my review in the best way possible. I got into Spawn from jump street (still own that first issue!) and this collection of the first six issues is more than worth the cheap price.
After a nearly fifteen year hiatus, I've decided to get back into comic books. After plowing through the best of what Alan Moore, Frank Miller and Neil Gaiman apparently have to offer, I decided to wrap myself in the comfort blanket of Spawn. It's a series I came of age loving and I'm frankly pleasantly surprised at how well the story and writing have held up. The artwork is every bit as good as I remember.
Part of the reason I lost interest in comic books is that I was tired of reading stories with no discernible ending. I'm past all that now and just want to take my time enjoying the ride. Spawn may never end in my lifetime, but I still look forward to checking out what's eluded me since the late 90s. I still have a few more of these trade paperbacks to purchase before venturing into uncharted territory, but it's been a fun trip down memory lane so far.

Made A HUGE Fan Out Of Me!!!, August 20, 2011
This review is from: Spawn Origins Volume 1 (Paperback)
I've known about Spawn since its beginnings in 1992. I had a friend who collected every issue and had shown me some of the artwork. But he never really told me about the story. It wasn't until I saw the "Spawn" movie that I got a real idea of what this comic was all about. I still, however, was into other graphic novels and comic book characters at the time, and ended up forgetting about Spawn - never reading any of the "Spawn" comics. Until now.
This book was my introduction to the comic book world of "Spawn". And what a wonderful introduction it was! Todd McFarlane is a genius! Like any fan of the comic book/graphic novel medium, I had heard of him. I knew that he created "Spawn", and that he had a highly successful run on the "Spider-Man" comics. But I had never read any of his work. I had only seen a few of his drawings that my friend had shown me from way back when. I must have just skimmed over them when he showed them to me because having now drooled over the eye-candy that is his pencils and inks in this collection of the first 6 issues of the series, I foam at the mouth just thinking about how cool the images he drew were.
If I had to compare his style to someone else's, I'd say that it's somewhat like Frank Miller's(from his classic run on "Daredevil" and his extremely visceral work on "The Dark Knight Returns"), with a little John Romita, Jr. and a dash of Marc Silvestri. It has kind of any edgy, highly expressive anime style, while simultaneously managing to maintain a smooth, fluid, traditional(but very original) American-comic book-style look and feel. His breakdowns and panel arrangements are innovative and just plain fun. There aren't a whole lot of artists who have the power to give me a total nerd-gasm, but his stuff really does the trick. Combine his pencils and inks with the superb color palette used by Steve Oliff, Reuben Rude and Olyoptics, and the unequivocally pitch-perfect lettering job done by Tom Orzechowski, and you have yourself one visually stimulating graphic novel to look at.
*One following side-note about the lettering: The way that Orzechowski bolds only part of a word when that part of the word is exactly the part that would be emphasized is a really nice departure from the use of bold lettering on an entire word when only one syllable, for example, should really be emphasized. Well done Tom.
If all of that gorgeous artwork isn't enough to wet your appetite, there's the story to consider. And, WOW! This is one enticing read. The plot is unique and cool, as are the characters; and the dialogue and internal monologue are executed flawlessly. The stuff that comes out of the mouth of Clown/The Violator is priceless. McFarlane knows how to expertly navigate between serious tones and dark humor. His storytelling balances action and character development about as well as any writer I've ever come across.
In the end, there really aren't enough compliments for me to give this book. I would highly recommend it to anyone interested in getting into "Spawn" or just a super cool story in general. Floored me. No, I was literally lying on the floor when I finished this book. This one is a knockout! 5 stars all the way.
